And each night the heart used to be taken captive

By eighty—rather, ninety souls, and more.

It would pine for this one, then fall in love with another,

And forget them at once when morning came.

And my heart was sober before loving you,

And it would play and jest in its love for people.

So when love for you called my heart, it answered,

And I do not see it departing from love for you.

May I be struck by your abandonment if I am lying,

Or if, in this world, I rejoice in anyone but you,

Or if there is anything in all the lands

That suits me when you are absent from my eyes.

    فلست أرى قلبي لغيرك يصلح

    So, if you wish, be united with me; and if you wish, do not;

For I do not see my heart as suited to anyone but you.
