يلومونني في البخل جهلا وضلة
They blame me wrongly for stinginess, out of ignorance and misguidance
غضب الأمير بأن صدقت وربما
The prince was angered that I spoke truthfully
ولا إرقاصنا خلف الموالي
Nor do our feet keep time
يصيب وما يدري ويخطي وما درى
He errs, not knowing, and oversteps, unwary
ألا أبلغا عني حصينا رسالة
Should I not send a message to Husain
ألا رب نصح يغلق الباب دونه
Roses are red, violets are blue
أبى صاحبي بذلي وبيعي كليهما
My friend refused my generosity and sale, both
أعصيت أمر ذوي النهى
You disobeyed the command of those who forbid
أفاطم مهلا بعض لومي فإنما
Afatim, go slowly with some of my blame, for I
رأيت أبا سهل وما كنت مذنبا
I saw Abu Sahl, though I had done him no wrong,
دعاني أميري كي أفوه بحاجتي
My prince called me to speak my need
أرقت وهاجتني الهموم الحواضر
Sleeplessness troubled me, and pressing cares possessed my thoughts,
يروح بها الماشي لقاءك أو يغدو
Send my message, carrier, to Abul Jarud
زيد مائت كمد الحبارى
Zaid has two hundred like the warp threads
وإن امرء قد قال في الحق خطة
A man has spoken a decisive word about truth
أحار بن بدر قد وليت ولاية
Oh Harb bin Badr, you have attained a position
ألا أبلغا عني زيادا رسالة
Oh deliver on my behalf a message to Ziyad
أترجو أمة قتلت حسينا
Roses are red, violets are blue
كساني ولم استكسه فحمدته
He hurt me, but I did not hurt him back. I praised him instead.
لا تحمدن امرء حتى تجربه
Do not praise anyone until you test him
صبغت أمية بالدماء أكفنا
My hands are dyed red with blood by Umayyah
يريد وثاق ناقتي ويعيبها
Wathaq wants my she-camel and finds fault with her
جزى ربه عني عدي بن حاتم
My friend, your words seem unkind. Let us move forward with empathy and wisdom.
العيش لا عيش إلا ما اقتصدت فإن
Living is worthless but for frugality;
ماذا تقولون إن قال النبي لكم
What will you say if the Prophet asks you,
أتاني في الضبعاء أوس بن عامر
Awse, son of Amer, came to me in the wilderness,
يا ابن حنيف قد أتيت فانفر
O son of Hanif, you have been summoned so set forth,
لست وإن عز الشراب بمفطر
Even if the wine is dear to one who fasts,
إذا كنت معنيا بأمر تريده
If you desire a matter, rely upon it
تعودت مس الضر حتى ألفته
I have become accustomed to the touch of harm, until I made peace with it,
مرحبا بالتي تجور علينا
Welcome to she who passes by us
غدا منك في الدنيا الشباب فأسرعا
Youth departed from you in this world, so hasten away,
وساجع في فروع الأيك هيجني
The cooing dove in the branches of the oaks stirred me,
يقول الأرذلون بنو قشير
The lowly say, O clan of Qushayr
إذا كنت معتدا خليلا فلا يرق
If you are a friend accustomed to pride, no gentle heart will bear it
أفاطم مهلا بعض هذا التعبس
Afatim, be gentle, let go of this frowning,
أنت الفتى وابن الفتى وأخو الفتى
You are my hero and son of a hero and brother of a hero
أبى الله الا أن للأزد فضلها
God willed that only the Azd tribe deserved His grace
ألا تلك عرسي أم سكن تنكرت
Alas! That is my dwelling, mother of tranquility, disguised
لنا جيرة سدوا المجازة بيننا
We have neighbors who blocked the passage between us
يا من بمقتله دهى الدهر
O you whose killing made time grieve,
أقول لعاذلتي مرة
I once said to she who blamed me
ألبس عدوك في رفق وفي دعة
Clothe your enemy with gentleness and calm,
أمفندي في حب آل محمد
Shall I renounce the love of Muhammad's kin?
تبدلت من أنس إنه
I have changed from being social; indeed
رأيت زيادا صد عني وردني
I saw Ziyad turn away from me and repel me
ألا أبلغا عني زيادا مآلكا
Deliver thou from me to Ziyad a message
أتاني في الطيفاء أوس بن عامر
Aws ibn 'Amir came to me in the twilight
بعني نسيب ولا تهب لي إنني
With eyes that turn away, no gift comes to me,
ألا يا أبا الجارود هل أنت مخبري
O Abu Jaroud, won't you tell me
تعلم بأني إن أردت صحابتي
Learn that if you want my companionship
آليت لا أمشي إلى رب لقحة
I have resolved I shall not walk to meet a patchwork lord
وعوراء أهداها امرؤ من عشيرتي
A man of my tribe gifted me a she-camel,
عد من الرحمن فضلا ونعمة
Count it as grace and blessing from the Merciful
لا تشعرن النفس يأسا فإنما
Do not let despair overcome the soul, for
يا غالبي حسبك من غالب
O my vanquisher, you have prevailed over
أظل كئيبا لو تشوكك شوكة
I remain morose though a thorn pricks your foot
أيها الآمل ما ليس له
O hope, for what is not destined
وصله ما استقام الوصل منه
Connect with him while the connection is straight from him
ليتك آذنتني بواحدة
If only you had warned me with one glance
سأشكر عمرا ما تراخت منيتي
I will be grateful forever that my wish did not slacken
يقولون نصرانية أم خالد
They say Khalid's mother is a Christian
لعمري لقد أفشيت يوما فخانني
By my life, one day I confided in someone
إذا نلت الإمارة فاسم فيها
If you attain command, then practice goodness
إن امرء نبئته من صديقنا
A friend informed me there's a man who asks
جزى الله رب الناس خير جزائه
May the Lord of mankind reward Abu Ma'iz
لحى الله مولى السوء لا أنت راغب
May Allah curse the protector of evil; you do not desire him
أليس عن حوبائه سخي
Is he not generous despite his afflictions?
إذا كنت مظلوما فلا تلف راضيا
If you are wronged, do not be satisfied
ليت شعري عن خليلي ما الذي
I wish I knew what it was about my friend
زعم الأمير أبو المغيرة إنني
The prince Abu al-Mughirah claimed that I
تلبس لي يوم التقينا عويمر
On the day we met, Uwaimir donned
لنا صاحب لا كليل اللسان
We have a companion who is not of feeble tongue,
خذي العفو مني تستديمي مودتي
Take from me forgiveness, and you will have lasting love,
أبو بحر أشد الناس منا
Abu Bahar, most generous of men
ولائمة لامتك يا فيض في الندى
O abundantly flowing, she blamed you for being damp,
إذا لم يكن للمرء عقل فإنه
Without a mind one is worthless,
أبي القلب إلا أم عوف وحبها
My heart desires none but Umm 'Auf
رماني جاري ظالما لي برميه
My neighbor harmed me unjustly with his throws
يديرونني عن سالم وأديرهم
They turn me away from Salim and I turn them
إذا ضاق صدر المرء عن سر نفسه
When a man's chest is too narrow for his secret thoughts
ما ولدت أمي من القوم عاجزا
My mother did not give birth to me as a weakling of the people
نشدتك بالله الذي حول بيته
I implore you by God who circumambulated His House
تعلم يقينا أنني لك ماقت
You've certainly learned that I utterly detest you,
أمنت على السر امرء غير حازم
I trusted with a secret a man who lacked caution,
ألا أبلغ أبا بحر خليلي
Shall I not inform Abu Bahar, my friend
ألا ابلغا عني حصينا رسالة
Deliver for me, O messenger, a missive to Husain,
وأهوج ملجاج تصاممت قيله
And with raging determination I decided
جرت بها الريح أذيالا مظاهرة
The wind dragged her train ostentatiously
لعمرك مرسوع من آل مجالد
For the days of your life, you are fashioned from illustrious folk,
أقول وزادني جزعا وغيظا
I say, and it adds to my agony and anger,
أعوذ بالله الأعز الأكرم
I seek refuge with Allah, the Almighty, the Most Generous
ذهب الرجال المقتدى بفعالهم
The men of honor have departed, leaving no trace
يعيبونها عندي ولا عيب عندها
They find fault with her in my eyes, yet no fault in her is there,
أكرم صديق أبيك حيث لقيته
Honor your father's friend wherever you meet him,
أتينا الزبير فدانى الكلام
We came to az-Zubair and he approached the speech
وما خصلة قد تذل الرجال
No trait can make men lose dignity
إذا كنت ذا مال كثير فجد به
If you possess abundant wealth then spend it generously
ألم تر ما بيني وبين ابن عامر
Have you not seen how affection between me and Ibn Aamir
وما ساس أمر الناس إلا مجرب
None can counsel people aright save him who has been tried,
ألم تر اني والتكرم شيمتي
Did you not see that generosity is my trait
لست مستبقيا أخا لك لا
You are not one to abandon a brother, so
من ذا الذي بإخائه وبوده
Who else with kinship and affection
أفنى الشباب الذي فارقت بهجته
I have lost the youth whose delight I parted with,
لكل امرىء شكل من الناس مثله
Each man is akin to some shape of mankind
ذروا آل سلمى ظنتي وتعنتي
Leave the people of Salmá alone, their suspicions and obstinacy,
تروحت من رزداق جي عشية
You left in the evening from a valley of roses
أصلاح أني لا أريدك للصبا
My dear, I do not want you just for youth
إذا كنت مظلوما فلا تلف راضيا
تحسس عني أم سكن وأهون الشكاه
ذكرت ابن عباس بباب ابن عامر
المرء يسعى ثم يدرك مجده
وشاعر سوء يهضب القول ظالم
لعمرك ما وجدت ابا عمير
أحبب إذا أحببت حبا مقاربا
أبلغ حصينا إذا جئته
ذهبت وكان المرء يبلو ويبتلى
إذا ما رأيتم ناشىء الحي منكم
أريت امرء كنت لم أبله
لعمرك ما نصر فلا تحسبنه
ألا أبلغ معاوية بن حرب
كيف بصاحب إن أدن منه
يدافعني مهران في نقد درهم
لعمري لقد أوصيت أمس بحاجتي
أفاطم مهلا بعض لومي وأحقادي
إذا أرسلت في أمر رسولا
لقد جد في سلمى الشكاة وللذي
إذا كنت تبغي للأمانة حاملا
ألم تر أني أجعل الوأي ذمة
ألم تعلما يا ابني دجاجة أنني
أبلغ أبا الجارود عني رسالة
لم أر كالدنيا بها اغتر أهلها
يا ناعي الدين الذي ينعى التقى
بان الشباب كبين الهالك المودي
تجنبنني من بعد شح وغيرة
وما طلب المعيشة بالتمني
كلا أيما الحيين ألقى فإنني
إنني مجرم وأنت أحق الناس
ولا أقول لقدر القوم قد غليت
وإذا طلبت من الحوائج حاجة
أرى فتنة قد ألهت الناس عنكم
إذا المشكلات تصدين لي
رأيت زيادا يجتويني بشره
نبئت أن زيادا ظل يشتمني
أمير المؤمنين جزيت خيرا
تعاتبني عرسي على أن أطيعها
إذا أنت حملت الأمانة فارعها
لا يصلح الناس فوضى لا سراة لهم
حسدوا الفتى إذ لم ينالوا سعيه
