1. Alas! That is my dwelling, mother of tranquility, disguised
Her ways to me and hopes fluctuate
١. أَلا تِلكَ عِرسي أُمُّ سَكنٍ تَنَكَّرَت
خَلائِقُها لي والخُطوبُ تَقَلَّبُ
2. Sometimes she acts coyly and I suppose
She harbors something, drawing near
٢. تَعَرَّضُ أَحياناً وَأَزعُمُ أَنَّها
تُحَوِّطُ أَمراً عِندَهُ تَتَقرَّبُ
3. So I said do not hurry, every sorrow
Will pass even if briefly, then go
٣. فَقُلتُ لَها لا تَعجَلي كُلُّ كُربَةٍ
سَتَمضي وَلَو دامَت قَليلاً فَتَذهَبُ
4. Whether you see me or not, sitting
At the door, not traveling or absent
٤. فَإِمّا تَرَيني لا أَريمُكِ قاعِداً
لَدى البابِ لا أَغزو وَلا أَتَغَيَّبُ
5. For you know not that sometimes a mirage
With pebbles so smooth, is but sand and dust
٥. فَإِنَّكِ لا تَدرينَ أَن رُبَّ سَربَخٍ
دِقاقُ الحَصى مِنهُ رِمالٌ وَسَبسَبُ
6. I stayed the course though worried
With dew fallen and scorching heat
٦. أَقَمتُ الهَدى فيهِ إِذا المَرءُ غَمَّهُ
سَقيطُ النَدى وَالدّاخِنُ المُتَحَلِّبُ
7. Until dawn broke with its star
And night’s darkness vanished, fading away
٧. إِلى أَن بَدا فَجرُ الصَباحِ وَنَجمُهُ
وَزالَ سَوادُ اللَيلِ عَمّا يُغَيِّبُ
8. And Sikhitiyah desert where gazelle wanders
And sight wanders or crumbles away
٨. وَصَحراءَ سِختيتٍ يَحارُ بِها القَطا
وَيرتَدُّ فيها الطَرفُ أَو يَتَقَضَّبُ
9. When mirage was like clouds
Lofty on its heels, arising
٩. قطعتُ إِذا كانَ السَرابُ كَأَنَّهُ
سَحابٌ عَلى أَعجازِهِ مُتَنَصِّبُ
10. On a figure so graceful, its walk
As caravan on rock collapsed
١٠. عَلى ذاتِ لَوثٍ تَجعَلُ الوَضعَ مَشيَها
كَما انقَضَّ عَيرُ الصَخرَةِ المُتَرَقِّبُ
11. You see it when people loaded upon it
Goods for supply and mount
١١. تَراها إِذا ما استَحمَلَ القَومُ بَعضَهُم
عَلَيها مَتاعٌ لِلرَّديقِ وَمَركِبُ
12. And it wakes from the hardship of travel as if
When the rear struck, it too is struck
١٢. وَتُصبِحُ عَن غَبِّ السُرى وَكَأَنَّها
إِذا ضُرِبَ الأَقصى مِنَ الرَّكبِ تُضرَبُ
13. As if it has a goal ahead
As far as the eye can see, sought and goes
١٣. كَأَنَّ لَها رَأماً تَراهُ أَمامَها
مَدى العَينِ تُستَهوى إِلَيهِ وَتَذهَبُ
14. And an awe-inspiring valley between fang and forest
Where a narrow pass has no alternative
١٤. وَخَلٍّ مَخُوفٍ بَينَ ضِرسٍ وَغابَةٍ
أَلَفَّ مَضيقٍ لَيسَ عَنهُ مُجَنَّبُ
15. As if the lion's dens in its belly
Are hearth and the lion paths its playground
١٥. كَأَنَّ مَصاماتِ الأُسودِ بِبَطنِهِ
مَراغٌ وَآثارُ الأَراجيلِ ملعَبُ
16. I walked when his mouth frowned
Gloomy darkness from night hovers
١٦. سَلَكتُ إِذا ما جَنَّ ثَغَر طَريقِهِ
أَغَمُّ دَجوجيٌّ مِنَ اللَيلِ غَيهَبُ
17. On a swift or shiny white Oryx
Sated by Indian poison ruined
١٧. بِذي هَبَراتٍ أَو بِأَبيَضَ مُرهَفٍ
سَقاهُ السِمامَ الهِندِكيُّ المُخَرَّبُ
18. I passed it walking proudly
Like master of space, his mind roaming
١٨. تَجاوَزتُهُ يَمشي بِرُكنيَ مِخشَفٌ
كَسيدِ الفِضا سِر بالُهُ مُتَجَوِّبُ
19. Noble and kind, his harm not feared
Nor his ignorance in what he finds and plays
١٩. كَريمٌ حَليمٌ لا يُخافُ أَذاتُهُ
وَلا جَهلُهُ فيما يَجِدُّ وَيَلعَبُ
20. When I said I angered him, his love returned
As the Oryx’s love returned vibrating
٢٠. إِذا قُلتُ قَد أَغضَبتُهُ عادَ وُدُّهُ
كَما عادَ وُدُّ الرَيَّةِ المُتَثَوِّبُ
21. And when meeting people, his company
Returned as the Oryx's love, fluctuating
٢١. وَكانَ إِذا ما يَلتَقي القَومَ قَرنُهُ
كَمَا عَادَ وُدُّ الرَّيَّةِ المُتَثَوِّبُ
