1. Abu Bahar, most generous of men
To us, after the life of Abi Mughirah

2. By your life! My soul rose not with frivolity
In it is weakness, nor short ambitions

3. Indeed he left for us the two youths from him
Brothers, trustworthy, of benefits plentiful

4. Nearby good, easy, not rugged
And some good made inaccessible by roughness

5. You saw that we possess a right
To which we point, and brethren and neighbors

6. And people of a settlement, so you found better
Than wastrels in it and the clan

7. For you knew not, and every soul
Its pages seen, and it has a bed

8. Possessor of a heart merciful to kinsman
And an eye, to what its sight attained

9. By your life! Allah did not make you a soul
In it greed, nor an evil soul

10. But you are no fierce, harsh man
Nor crumbling, quarrelled by gloom

11. With the best of temperaments and the best of manners
You were created, and God increased you bounty

12. As if, when we came to him, we alighted
Beside a meadow, fresh rainwatered
