1. God willed that only the Azd tribe deserved His grace,
And that they were pegs in every land.
١. أَبى اللَهُ الّا أَنَّ لِلأَزدِ فَضلَها
وَأَنَّهُمُ أَوتادُ كُلِّ بِلادِ
2. They gave sanctuary to Ziyad when he surrendered himself to them,
And the decision was Ziyad's decision.
٢. أَجاروا زياداً حينَ أَسلَمَ نَفسَهُ
إِلَيهِم وَكانَ الرأيُ رأيَ زيادِ
3. So they became, in al-Haddan and al-Uzad below it,
With spears like the poles of striped tents,
٣. فَأَصبَحَ في الحَدّانِ وَالأُزدُ دونَهُ
بسُمرٍ كَأَشطانِ الجرورِ حِدادِ
4. His is a pulpit which he mounted every Friday,
And the apparatus of authority, police and court ushers.
٤. لَهُ مِنبَرٌ يَرقاهُ في كُلِّ جُمعَةٍ
وَآلَة مُلكٍ شُرطَةٍ وَحشادِ
