ألكم إلى رد الشباب سبيل
Is there a way back to youth restored?
لا تظنن بي سلوا وإن كنت
Do not think me easy to shed a tear though you are
قل لابن جابر الذي جعل الله
Tell the son of Jabir, whom God made
وددت التصابى فيك إذ كان عاذرى
I wished to meet you when my excuse was present
كما قلتما برء الصبابة في الياس
As you both said, youth’s innocence lies in despair
من علم القلب ما يملى من الغزل
Who taught the heart what it dictates of love poems -
لا أعذر المرء يصبو وهو مختار
I do not excuse the man who loves while he has a choice
لو كنت أشفق من خضيب بنان
If I feared the censure of censors
إذا نثر الناس الهرقلية الصفرا
When people scatter saffron
قد طال للماطل أن يقتضى
The procrastinator has too long delayed his duty,
هو منزل النجوى بخالي الأعصر
It is the abode of intimacy though my mornings are desolate,
من رأى المجد يثير القلاصا
He who saw glory inciting the brave,
وسلافة بزلت فأبرز دنها
A loose tooth was pulled, revealing
قد رجع الحق إلى نصابه
Truth has returned to its proper place
صبحها الدمع ومساها الأرق
Her tears adorned her, and insomnia dressed her
يا صحابي واين منى صحبى
My friends, where are my friends
وعيشكم لا ورد الحوم
Neither the flower blossoms of your life,
نظرت ولم أبغ إلا شفائي
I looked, desiring only my cure,
لا مرية في الردى ولا جدل
No doubt in ruin, no dispute,
ليت الهوى يصرفه الراقى
If only passion would divert him, the gentle one,
لأى مرمى تزجر الأيانقا
To what aim do you restrain the graceful gazelles,
عساها تنجلى وخلاك ذم
May it be unveiled and spare you blame
أى لبيب بك لم يخدع
What sane person have you not deceived,
يروح ويغدو علينا الحمام
The pigeons come and go around us,
تعاب معاشر وكلوا البرايا
A group is blamed, though they traversed the wilds
غراء تحسبها غمودا كلما
Illusions you think are lasting whenever
أحاط بى العذال حتى صرفتهم
They surrounded me with advice until I repelled them
بالجزع ذى السمرات لى قمر
With the slender, dark-skinned beloved I have a moon,
أرى الأموال في اللؤماء تثوِي
I see wealth residing in the vile,
كان الوداد منغصا لوشاتنا
The love we shared was blissful
لو يهتدى وصفى إلى شغفى
If my passion could find its way
يا ماء لينة لو نقعت أوامى
O gentle water, if my beloved were to bathe
إن لم أكن من راضعى الخمر
If I am not one who drinks wine
عينى التي علقت حبائلكم بها
My eyes which your ropes have attached
لم أبك أن رحل الشباب وإنما
I do not weep because youth has departed
أبا الخير المفيد لكل خير
O father of all good and benefit
قل لابن قران مقالة ناصح
Tell the son of Qurran a wise man's advice
وقائل لم هجرت الشعر من زمن
A critic asked, “Why have you abandoned poetry for so long?”
قالوا ابن مالك قرنان فقلت لهم
They said: "Son of Malik has horns!" I said to them:
عذب من الماء قد سدت موارده
Sweet water, its springs are blocked
شككت وقد زارنى غلطة
I doubted when a blunder came to me
لجاجة قلب ما يفيق غرورها
The obstinacy of a heart whose delusions do not awaken,
نبئت أن فلانا قد شحا فمه
I was told that so-and-so had tightened his mouth
شدوا على ظهر الصبا رحلى
Prepare my camel for departure, O youths!
حرام على طروق الديار
It is forbidden for me the does of the forest
ما ضاع من أيامنا هل يغرم
The days that slipped from our hands, could their loss ever be compensated?
مرض بقلبك ما يعاد
A disease in your heart that will not be cured
أكرم بوجه الراكب المعنق
Honor the face of the rider embracing his mount
لست أقضى إذا رأيتك نذرا
I make no vow when I see you,
النجاء النجاء من أرض نجد
Escape, escape to the land of Najd
رأيت الحب ليس ينال إلا
I saw that love is not attained
تفيض نفوس بأوصابها
Overflowing souls with their passions,
هززناكم بالمدح نجنى ثماركم
We praised you hoping to reap your fruits
قلت لعمرو جذلا
I said to Amr the coward,
فر من الحب قلبه فنجا
His heart fled from love, so he escaped
جاريت في الحب أطلاقا بلا أمد
I have embarked on love boundless, without end
قد علمت ليلة الحمى ورعى
The night of fever knew my vigil,
تسعى بنا قدم الرجاء وما الذي
The foot of hope urges us on though what does it avail
يا حسن مغداك وطيب الرواح
O beauty your bed's comfort and sweet scent of repose
لا يهن عندك اختلال بجسمى
My body's frailties cannot make you heedless,
على من تبيع متاع الأدب
To whom do you sell the wares of literature
قوم كئوسهم السيوف وخمرهم
A people whose swords are their cups and whose
قد حصلنا من الماش كما قي
We have obtained from life what was said of old:
يا درة البحر لو أنصفت نفسك ما
O pearl of the sea, if you were fair to yourself, you would not
قالوا وزيران هوى نجم ذا
They said two stars of passion rose
ما يصنع المستسر بالغاب
What can the lurker in the forest do
تظن فراقا أن تثار حمول
You think separation stirs up affection,
ودادك في قلبي ألذ من المنى
Your love in my heart is sweeter than wishes
لا مجد إلا للإمام القائم
No glory except for the rising Imam
تزاحم في صدرى القوافى ولا أرى
Crowding in my heart are verses though I see
يسأئلني ما حاجتي في دياره
He asks me what my need is in his abode
يا ليتهم حين صيروا خدما
Oh, if only when they made servants into workers,
قالوا ابن دارستنا وزير
They said, he is the son of our land's minister,
ليحيى بن عبد الله عرس كريمة
O Yaḥyá ibn ʿAbd Allāh, a noble wedding is forbidden
أبى الله إلا أن تجود وتنعما
God willed that you be generous and bestow bounty,
ما زال يكشف عنى كل طارقة
Every bright dawn reveals me
غدا تراها جنحا على الغضا
Tomorrow you will see her wings over the meadow
عيوب لابن مالك قد كفتنى
Faults of Ibn Malik have wearied me
كان الوداد منغصا لوشاتنا
The love we shared was a torment
قلقل ركابك في الفلا
Rouse your steed in empty plains,
أضدان في جسد واحد
Two opposites in one body residing,
يقولون راجع صاحب الرأى واطرح
They say return to the wise man and cast off
أيا بؤس قوم حسان الشخوص
Oh what misfortune for a people whose eloquence is exalted
عزاء فما يصنع الجازع
What can the mourner do?
أتنساها على خيف
Do you forget her on the hillside,
قالوا ذر الشعر وكن عائدا
They said, "Abandon poetry and be content
أبينا أن نطيعكم أبينا
We refused to obey you, we refused
ترى رائح يأتى بأخبار من غدا
تزاورن عن أذرعات يمينا
أكذا يجازى ود كل قرين
ما فاز بالحمد ولا ناله
ماذا يعيب رجال الحى في النادي
أؤمل بعد هذا الأسر حلا
لقاؤك يا لبنى خيال
زوج اللهو يابنة العنقود
أيا ولد الحصين وما حصين
لا تغتبط يا بن الحصين بصبية
تقاعست عن أبناء دهرى عائفا
أظنك تبتغى حلب الثغور
سنحن كما اعترض الربرب
بدا ضاحكا لا لأحظى بما
قد بان عذرك والخليط مودع
كل يوم خل يرحل عنا
عتب الشريف لأن نشرت محاسنا
إحدى الكواعب من بنى نصر
تمدح عمروا وتريد رفدا
زمان فاسد النظر
وزير رضى من بأسه وانتقامه
يا شهوة النوم وما لدته
يا طيب يوم حجبت شمسه
إذا كان هذا الجهل قد شاع في الورى
بتنا على الزوراء نهدم ما
تخاوصت الحسناء عن شيب لمتى
كان الوداد منغصا لوشاتنا
هل في جنوب اللوى وجد فأطربه
دست الوزارة يبتغى حجرا
لحى ابن دارست على إمساكه
ارجع إلى ما أنت أهل له
ضيوف ابن فضلان سواء نهارهم
علقتها حماء مصقولة
هل تعرف الحسناء تفخر
تسائلنى درعى أهذى هي النبل
يا آل عوف أنجدوا الصبا
يا كاهن الحب خبرنى من الجانى
أقسم بالعاديات ضبحا
بعينيك إضرامهم للأكم
إذا فتن الإنسان يوما بمنظر
ذات أيد ثلاثة أبد الدهر
وليلة قد نسجت ريحها
قد عاد بدر الدجى إلى فلكه
