1. I make no vow when I see you,
Save strewing you with praise and gratitude,

2. And when the wind carries it as incense,
You are adorned where rubies should be set.

3. The heart of one befriending you brims over
With ire fills the ear of one who bears you enmity.

4. Of merit, I have none save that
I deck myself with necklaces, my throat laid bare.

5. I gather through your fair conduct beauty’s bloom,
Their youthful blush colors my cheeks.

6. So when you rinse your mouth with wine for me
My tongue revolves as liquor in the mouth.

7. All this, the effort of the weak, and none
Has built your glory better, or raised up your fame.

8. No sleep visits the eye when you have gone,
Nor can the heart in a lonely chest find rest,

9. Why should not the land shudder when you turn
From it, at ease with another, spurning its embrace?

10. Moments drag on until the day appears a year,
And a day seems a month to one who longs and sighs,

11. If, when you slipped away, the land set out in quest,
It would at daybreak find itself behind the throng.

12. You are the spirit the body cannot live without.
Only so long as it can be your den, will it endure.

13. Truly, the lands are lifeless when deprived
Of the suns and moons of giving shining in their spheres,

14. The clouds of bounty thunder, and pour down
Open hands, lightning flashing glad tidings,

15. Wherever you step, the land blooms green,
Wherever you cast your glance, the horizon gleams clear.

16. We pardon the beloved when he shuns us,
Make no complaint, but find excuse for his severance,

17. The lover wishes intimacy, desires reunion,
Yet when denied, loves remoteness and estrangement.

18. Do not make us desolate with separation,
Since we cannot endure being sundered from you.

19. If being with you has made us drunk today with joy,
By the bitterness you made us taste yesterday,

20. As long as you are safe, we take the long way round,
Pardon and clemency our path and destination.
