- أعيذك أن تمنى بتبريح لوعةI pray you be spared the torment of burning grief,
- أغرقت في بحر الأسى الأجذالاI drowned joys in the sea of sorrow,
- أقلى الدنا وأخاف فرقتهاI loathe the world and fear parting from it;
- أقم وادعا واصبر على الضيم والأذىRemain at peace, and endure oppression and harm;
- أكلما عشت يوماIs it that whenever I live a day,
- ألا عد إلى العهد الذي كنت أحمدAh, return to the days I used to praise;
- ألا ليت شعري فيك هل أنت ذاكريOh, if only I knew: do you remember me?
- ألا ليت شعري هل لمافات مرجعAh, would that I knew: can what has passed return?
- الله في كلف الأحشاء مفتونFor God's sake, pity one love-stricken at heart, enthralled.
- ألومك لو أرى لو ميك يجديI would blame you if I thought my reproach could help,
- أمطروا الدمع عليه لا الندىRain tears upon him, not dew,
- إن وجها رأيته ليلة السبIndeed, a face I saw on Saturday night
- أناديك لو رد النداء رميمI would call to you, if crumbling bones could answer a call,
- آنستني بالأملا المغريYou comforted me with alluring hope,
- انظر إلى عبابيLook at my surging waters,
- أهواك والحب داء أيما داءI love you, and love is a sickness—what a sickness!
- أوشك الأصباح أن يمحو الدجىDawn is about to erase the darkness,
- أيا ساعة مليت فيها بحسنهO hour in which I delighted in his beauty,
- أين تلك العهود وافقن آماليWhere are those pledges that matched my hopes,
- أينغي يا زهراتيBlossom, O my flowers,
- إيه عبد الرحمن أذكيت جمراGo on, Abd al-Rahman—you have fanned embers,
- بأيدينا قلوبكمIn our hands are your hearts.
- بعض بغضائكم أولى البغضاءLess of your hatred, you people of hate!
- بنات الدجى هذا الذي لم يزل لهDaughters of darkness, this is he who has always had
- تبغي حياة لا تحس صروفهاYou seek a life whose vicissitudes you do not feel,
- ترى يذكر الأحياء أهل المقابرI wonder: do the dwellers of graves remember the living,
- ترى ينسخ الإصباح من ظلمة القبرYou see dawn efface the darkness of the grave,
- تضحك عن طلها غلائلهاHer gossamer robes smile, revealing her dew,
- تقبس النار وإن طال القدمIt borrows fire, however remote the past,
- تلاقيت والدنيا لقاء لفرقةThe world and I met only to part,
- تناءت على قرب الديار السرائرOur inner feelings have grown distant, though our homes are near.
- توددت لا أني إليك فقيرI courted you—not because I stand in need of you,
- حثا شرابهما في ظل حسانThey hastened their drinking in Hassan's shade.

- رفقا بنفسك أنني رجلBe gentle with yourself—for I am a man
- سأهدل كالحمائم في رياضI shall coo like doves in gardens
- سل الخلصاء ما صنعوا بعهديAsk the true friends what they did with my pledge.
- سيعرقني يأسي ويغلبني ضنيMy despair will gnaw at me, and wasting sickness will overpower me;

- صلاتي لربي الصمت في معبد الدجىMy prayer to my Lord is silence in the temple of darkness,
- طاف بالراح عليناHe went round among us with wine,
- عباس أقصتك عن خلصانك الدارAbbas, your dwelling has kept you far from your closest friends,

- قد أفعل الشيء لا أبغي به أملاI may do a thing, seeking no hoped-for end through it.
- قد ذهب الحول بالربيع وبالصحوThe year has carried away spring and clear weather,
- قد وجدت السهد أهدى للأسىI have found sleeplessness a surer guide to sorrow,
- قضى غير مأسوف عليك من الورىYou died, unmourned by humankind,
- قمر يحلم في لج السماA moon dreams in the depths of the sky,
- كفنوني إن مت في ورق الزهرShroud me, if I die, in flower petals,
- كل يوم لي شكاةEvery day I have a complaint,
- كيف به والجفاء يبعد بهWhat of him, when coldness carries him far away,
- لا اليأس مجد ولا الآمال نافعةNeither despair brings glory, nor hopes are beneficial,
- لا أنس منظرها وقد طلعتI shall not forget the sight of her as she appeared
- لا تدرها فإنني غير صاحDo not pass it round, for I am not sober.
- لا تزر أن قضيت قبري ولا تبكDo not visit my grave if I die, nor
- لذة العيش في مدام وخدThe pleasure of life lies in wine and a cheek.
- لذيذ إذا در قطر الرهامSweet, when the drizzle's drops flow,

- لنجي الهم يجتاب الكرىThe destiny lifts sorrow to reap souls

- ليتديواني يكون لهWould that my book of poems had
- ما أضعت الهوى ولا خنتك الغيبI have not squandered love, nor betrayed you in your absence;

- وسم الربيع الأرض هفي كأختهاSpring marked the earth; she is like her sister,
- وما أنس ذاك اليوم لا أنس طيبهAnd whatever I forget of that day, I shall not forget its sweetness,
- يا أخلاي مرحبا وسلاماO my dear friends, welcome and peace!
- يا أسفا للربيع يذهب بالوردAlas for spring, carrying the roses away!
- يا أم لا تجزعي مما يداهمناO mother, do not be distraught by what assails us
- يا حبذا أمسى منAh, how dear was my yesterday, a

- يا حسن واحسرتا على غررO Beauty, alas for the radiant verses
- يا رب باب لم أجد مفتاحهAh, many a door whose key I have not found!

- يا شاعر النفس كم أبكاك مصرعهاO poet of the soul, how deeply its death has made you weep!
- يا صارفا لحظه عني على عجلO you who turn your gaze from me in haste,
- يا قرة العيني يا سكنيO delight of the eye, O my solace,
- يا قمرا لا يعرف الأفولاO moon that knows no waning
- يا ليتني لو يصح لي أملOh, if only I could have hope
