Is it that whenever I live a day,

I feel that I have died through it?

And whenever I think that I

have found a true friend, I lose him.

I know no peace in all my life,

as though I had been bereft of it.

The eye takes in nothing but

what has wearied of me, and I of it.

As though my eye were directed

    toward what I have hated.

The sun lights me, but only

so that I may behold what I have grown sick of.

    يا ليتني ما لبسته

    Life's garment is hateful;

oh, if only I had never worn it!
