You see dawn efface the darkness of the grave,
I wonder, does daybreak dispel some of the grave’s darkness,
and a reviver born of warmth break death’s cold.
And does life-giving warmth break death’s cold?

Is there no caller to mourn a soul and raise it,
Is there no voice to mourn a soul raised up
then lay it low? Say to her: “Fate—I do not know.”
And cast down by my forever telling it, ‘I do not know’?

When, one day, the earth’s belly closes around the young man,
When the earth’s belly one day closes over the young man,
does reason step beyond Death, or is it struck down?
Does death pass the mind by, or is it struck down?

And how did his far-stretching light disappear,
And how did his light vanish, extending far,
when the whole earth had grown too narrow for him?
When the whole earth had grown too narrow for him?
