My heart greets you, though we are far apart,

as a drowning man signals to the people.

Since you left, I patch the garments of my life,

though once, through you, their weave was dense.

And I thought myself a skilled healer, but when

I took the illness in hand, the rents defeated me.

And whenever darkness stretched over me,

I would say, "Every setting sun has its sunrise."

Now I have come to dread the sunlight, so much

that its veins seem to be the pitch-dark night.

Have you, then, a longing for me like mine—

as though it had set a fire within the heart?

My love is young, so be tender toward it,

as the tenderhearted care for a child,

with gentle ways, just as I have known them:

time is too narrow for them, yet they never grow narrow.

And do not surrender it to the days, for I

see that faithlessness is the days' habitual way.

And guard it within the heart's veil, as I do,

so it may keep its hold within both our hearts.
