هبوبthe blowing of النسيمthe breeze بعرفwith the fragrance of الرياضthe gardens
هبوب النسيم بعرف الرياض
يرقرقهit makes it ripple فيin حواشيthe fringes of الظلامthe darkness
يرقرقه في حواشي الظلام
is the breeze blowing with the gardens' fragrance,
The breeze blows through the gardens,
making it ripple along the fringes of darkness.
Rustling gently amid the darkness.
لذيذٌdelightful تحدرthe downward flow of ماءthe water of الغديرthe pool
لذيذٌ تحدر ماء الغدير
وقدand already أنطقgave voice to الليلthe night خرسthe mute ones among الحمامthe doves
وقد أنطق الليل خرس الحمام
Sweet is the downward flow of the pool's water,
Delightful, water flows from the stream,
while night has given voice to the silent doves.
And the night makes the doves' silence speak.
لذيذٌdelightful دبيبthe creeping of الكرىslumber فيinto الجفونthe eyelids
لذيذٌ دبيب الكرى في الجفون
بعدafter الكلالweariness وطولand the length of القيامstanding
بعد الكلال وطول القيام
Sweet is slumber creeping into the eyelids,
Delightful, drowsiness tingles the eyelids,
after weariness and long hours of standing.

ولكنand yet لفظكyour speech منthan ذاكthat أحلىsweeter
ولكن لفظك من ذاك أحلى
وأوقعand more affecting فيin قلبيmy heart المستهامlove-stricken
وأوقع في قلبي المستهام
Yet your speech is sweeter than all that,
But your voice is sweeter than this,
and more stirring to my love-stricken heart.
More touching to my attentive heart.
أظلI remain إذاwhen استكunclear as written فيin مسمعيmy hearing
أظل إذا استك في مسمعي
يرفit flutters علىupon جناحthe wing of الغرامlove
يرف على جناح الغرام
I remain, when [unclear word] in my hearing,
When you speak, I listen rapt,
it flutters upon the wing of love.

As though my heart were an enchanted vessel,

among the ships, amid its towering waves.
From the sky in surging waves,
تعانقهاembrace her نفحاتgentle breaths of النسيمthe breeze
تعانقها نفحات النسيم
ويرقصهاand makes her dance زجلٌa clamor ذوwith التطامcrashing
ويرقصها زجلٌ ذو التطام
The breeze's gentle breaths embrace her,
Caressed by the breeze’s breaths,
and a crashing clamor makes her dance.
Danced by rhythmic chant.
شفاهٌlips يؤججنthey kindle أنفاسهhis breaths
شفاهٌ يؤججن أنفاسه
ويلثمنand they kiss ألفاظهنtheir words الظاميthe thirsty one
ويلثمن ألفاظهن الظامي
Lips kindle his breaths,
Lips ignite their breaths
and their words kiss the thirsty one.
And kiss their burning words.
تمهلlinger ألفاظهhis words علهاperhaps they
تمهل ألفاظه علها
تبردcool فيin فيهhis mouth حرthe heat of الأوامparching thirst
تبرد في فيه حر الأوام
His words linger, perhaps they
Words tarry in your mouth to cool
may cool the heat of parching thirst within his mouth,
The heat of passions in your soul.
وتقرعand strike أذنيmy ear فتهتاجيso you are stirred (irregular form)
وتقرع أذني فتهتاجي
كأنas though لهاit had نشواتecstasies of المدامwine
كأن لها نشوات المدام
and strike my ear, setting it astir,
They strike my ear and I rejoice
as though it knew the ecstasies of wine.
As if they were drafts of wine.
إذاwhen قيدshackles الهمcare خطوthe stride of الرجاءhope
إذا قيد الهم خطو الرجاء
أطلقهsets it free ليfor me سحرthe magic of الكلامspeech
أطلقه لي سحر الكلام
When care shackles hope's stride,
When care binds the steps of hope,
