His eyes became like a sailor's who saw
By dazzling beauty that filled the eyes.
The vision filled with magnificent light
سحرتهbewitched him منfrom among حورhouris (fair-eyed maidens) البحارthe seas خريدةٌa virgin maiden
سحرته من حور البحار خريدةٌ
حربa foe النهىreason فغداso he became بغيرwithout مناصرan ally
حرب النهى فغدا بغير مناصر
A maiden among the houris of the seas bewitched him,
He was enchanted by a sea nymph he bought
A foe to reason; so he was left without an ally.
Though forbidden, without an ally he fought
فمضىso he went on وقدand already ألهتهshe distracted him عماfrom what يتقيhe guards against
فمضى وقد ألهته عما يتقي
منof صخرةa rock تردىbrings ruin ويمand a sea زاخرsurging
من صخرة تردى ويم زاخر
So he went on, she having distracted him from what he guarded against:
So he went as she had distracted him
A rock that brings ruin, and a surging sea.
From a falling rock and abundant danger
بيناهwhile he يرمقهاhe gazes at her تعالتrose high حولهaround him
بيناه يرمقها تعالت حوله
لججbillows علىupon لججbillows كطودlike a mountain سائرmoving
لجج على لجج كطود سائر
As he gazed at her, there rose around him
While he looked at her, waves rose around
Billows upon billows, like a moving mountain.
Surging swell upon swell like wandering dunes
