And whatever I forget of that day, I shall not forget its sweetness,

When the decrees of fate roused me from my sleep.

Sweet was its ringing sound in a listener's ear,

And enchanting to the beholder was the glitter of its bubbles.

It streamed down till I said, 'It will never end,'

And abated till I said, 'The sources have run dry.'

It flowed and flowed, then its torrent grew still,

And poured forth wondrous beauty and majesty.

By God, how clear and polished its water was!

As though a sky had been set in its soil.

I cast my glance into the polished sheen of its surface,

And it revealed a figure, flawless wherever bare.

Counterparts of what I show him and openly express.

For that is only an image of your beauty.

Come to one whose pursuit will not weary you,

And one whom water cannot keep you from embracing,

And one of whom you are an image, while he is its original.

And were you ever anything but part of what his side enfolded?'
