Let your gaze roam over my life: you will see its traces

Faded, effaced by the fading nights.

    وجاءت ليالٍ بالنحوس مواقر

    The nights of happiness passed, and they were good;

And nights came heavy-laden with ill omens.

And I awoke, my hopes around me withering,

Their leaves and blossoms falling away.

At evening, bright lightning vies with them in height,

And raging winds sweep them along.

And the boughs are stripped of youth's leaves,

And singing birds have shunned their withered growth.

None seeks them out but ravens of misery,

Whose cawing scatters above the boughs.

Where, then, are love's flowers? Oh, how long my grief!

And where are youth's fresh blossoms?

And where are the blossoms of joy, that seem

To greet a young man while life is lush and fresh?

And where are the blossoms of contentment and acceptance?

Vicissitudes dripping poison have assailed them.

And where are the flowers of patience, safety, and hope?

Surging sorrows have hidden them from sight.

Time folded them away; it does not unfold what it has folded.

So your eyes will never behold them, O grieving one.

They vanished, and with them vanished safety and all goodness,

And calamities closed in upon life's bloom.

They lie where no sun restores their life

To them, nor is the clouds' downpour any help.

Must a tender flower of mine, every day,

Die, so I weep for it while my fate mocks?

Life's blossoms fall upon my hand,

And my heart is wounded, and my breast seethes.

As though a plague ravaged them; scarcely had they

Blossomed before the fates cut them short.

And there is no good in a life when it is barren,

Its inward and outward parts alike yellowed.

When a pleasant day passes me—and sometimes

The radiant stars smile in the night—

I look around, searching for my youth

And its flowers, while tears waver on my eyelid.

My entrails are torn whenever I miss them,

And all-pervading longing cuts off my breath.

And a white blossom of chastity I have lost,

And, despite myself, my heart remembers.

So the heart's grave hid her, and she was drenched

By an eyelid pouring its rain through all time.

We wept for her a while, then were driven back

To patience by time, which chastens with calamities.

Nor is it strange that death laid hold of her,

And time charged against her—and time is unjust.

And how can I hope she will endure, when already

Untimely deaths have carried her peers away from me?

And indeed, she cannot endure alone,

And what the eyes pour out is folly.

And mourning what will not return is delusion,

And the yearning of hearts is torment.

Death will carry me off, however long my days,

And the graves will make me forget what I have lost.
