I have found sleeplessness a surer guide to sorrow,
I have found sleep kinder to sorrow
And sleep more grievous to the heart.
And found waking sharper to the heart

How often does time oppress us
Wakefulness, one world, and another in sleep?
In the waking of this life and the next

Neither the next life is safe nor is sleep a refuge

Death! If there is no escape, then death!
If there is no escape from fate
Indeed, it is succor and deliverance for the soul.
Then it is relief and salvation for the soul
