My helper against the days, my breast is seared
The days have worn out my wings
by your lament, till I can scarcely speak clearly.
Your complaints, until I can hardly see
وماand not أناI خيراًbetter منكthan you حالاًin condition وإنماbut only

And I am no better off than you; I merely
And I am no better off than you
grapple with what befalls me, hoping it will grow easier.
I just deal with what I find, hoping it gets easier

Calamities spring up in time's wake;
The times bring changing circumstances
certainty dies and revives in their wake.
That alternately die and revive with certainty
تغيرchange أراءopinions الفتىof the young man تكباتهhis setbacks

A young man's misfortunes change his views,
A young man's opinions change
as though the young man were dough in their palm.
As if he were soft clay they mold

How soon one view is assailed by another,
So why do opinions about the mind differ so quickly
and how swiftly sorrows wear conjectures down!
And how soon assumptions wear out and turn sad
وأوجعand most painful ماwhat ألقاهI encounter it فيin العيشlife حيرةٌbewilderment

And the most painful thing I meet in life is bewilderment,
The most painful thing I've met in life is confusion
like a wretched spinner who has no eyes.
Like a lost gazelle, deprived of eyesight
وإنيand indeed I لأدريI surely know أنthat للخيطfor the thread مذهباًa course

And I surely know the thread has a course,
And I know the thread has a course
though I do not know what it may be.
Though I don't know how it goes

And I know that life has a purpose,
And I don't know if life has a purpose
but life's aims are manifold.
But the ends of life are skills

Nor do I know the name of what I am spinning,
And I have no knowledge of the name of the one I court
nor its use, even if that were made clear.
Nor would it help if I did know

One came to me whose nature I had never before fathomed,
One came to me whom I did not know before
and said, casting down the thread, with calm assurance:
He said "Take this thread and spin it, you are most able

وماand not لكyou have إلّاexcept شمألa left hand ويمينand a right hand
“Take it and spin it; you are blind from birth,
You have nothing left but a spindle and your right hand"
and you have only a left hand and a right.”
But my fingers may let the thread slip

وتطلبهand seek it كفايmy two hands وهوwhile it is شطونfar away
Yet sometimes the thread eludes my finger,
And my palm will search for it as it falls
and my two hands seek it, though it lies far away.
So I know the wind has stirred and without God's help
فأعلمthen I know أنthat الريحthe wind ثارتhas risen وأننيand that I
إذاif لمnot يعنيhelps me اللَهGod سوفshall أحينI perish
Then I know the wind has risen, and that I
I will fail
shall perish unless God helps me.
But from what I fear, where can I flee

أخافI fear وماليand I have no فيin الحياةlife عيونeyes

But where is there escape from what
When I have no eyes in life
I fear, when I have no eyes in life?
