They hastened their drinking in Hassan's shade.

His fragrance was our sweet basil in the tavern gathering:

    وهناً يهيج أطرابي وأشجاني

    the beloved's fragrance—nothing compares with his wafted scent;

in the still of night, it stirs my raptures and sorrows.

They hastened their drinking until I saw them

hearing nothing, though they were speaking.

They are two dear friends, thirsty for my troubles,

and through wine they dive into my secret.

And they laugh when wine makes me reel

with its dizziness, and my secret and my avowal become one.

And they marvel at the falsehood I weave, making it

a pretext for my beguiler, radiant in beauty.

And they deem me a libertine, as though neither

had ever known the tyranny of yearning and sorrow.

Whoever sees him almost devours him with his eyes,

if only he could, staring with a lovesick gaze.

    ولحظه الخلد إلّا أنه جاني

    And his speech is magic, except that it is words;

and his gaze is immortality, except that it wounds.

A radiant face whose origin is Paradise,

filling every gaze with beauty and goodness.

And he who adorned it said: Describe this night of mine.

My soul be your ransom, hopeful one and giver of favors!

I summoned poetry and unlocked its closed door,

like the morning star urging on dawn's faltering light.

    لكن دعوت فما أعيا بتبيان

    Had I been left to myself, I would have faltered over it;

but you called, so I am not at a loss to describe it.

May that bygone night be watered and cherished,

when the wood of my branches grew fresh again.

When people were my playground, I played without restraint

with the legs and chins of them all.

You gave me love to drink as we slowly sipped

the sweetest thing two lovers ever sip.

And you kept pelting me with sidelong glances,

so I shielded myself with the lowered eyes of one unaware.

And I turn my thoughts from you with jests, hoping

one day to return to my reason and sound judgment,

and claim that my wasting sickness has robbed me of reason,

so I may distract my heart from bewitching beauty.

And jasmine we smelled, passing it between us—

I inhaled it, and inhaled beauty at the same time.

We were clouds, and you the moon among them,

then a jealous one's winds tore our gathering apart.

Or like light, whose threads a star cast

from among the leaves of branches and boughs.

    The nights of parting slackened my lutes' strings;

oh, my soul's grief for my harp and lutes!

O night he gave me, I never recall you

without my eyelids raining a torrent of tears.

    After solace, the heart's yearning returns;

if only that returning yearning had passed me by!

How many nights afterward I endured sleepless,

and every sorrow in them came to me in pairs!

Like the sea when the wind blows in a storm

is my breast, dashing its hollows against its ridges.

O you who kindle fire in my heart and leave it

to scorch my entrails and weaken the edifice of my being,

until I came to speak words that blaze,

as though they came from a volcano's entrails.

Cool my fires with your nearness, for they have

an edge that flails like a devil.

You hastened to desert me, O you who loom over my hope,

and O my sickness, my obsession, and my preoccupation!

And our two nights are mine from you: one

freely given, the other through promise and entreaty.

Are two nights my reward from you, their end

    estrangement and heartbreak after kindness?

The house is not a month or a year away,

but minutes that rush on at full speed.

If I call you to show care, do you make no haste,

yet if I call you to delay, do you never lag?

People have spoken of the beauty in you—

how remote that is to a lovelorn, dreaming heart!

O paradise of the eye, why is the earth clad

in ample robes whose warp is care and sorrow?

O beguiling garden among the gardens of beauty,

swaying with flourishing growth, far and near,

your anemones bend to the gatherer, above

    choice daisies amid sweet basil;

and narcissus above them strikes with its gaze

at a wounded heart long steeped in grief.

    هيهات ذاك حرمنا أي حرمان

    I had thought that I had filled my hand;

far from it! How utterly we were deprived!

Never has one more perfect in sweetness and beauty than you

been seen by my eye or heard of by my ears in all my life.

Nor is anyone more complete in sorrow and anguish than I,

O you who strike me down with beauty that has no equal!

O Beauty, how many a lovely one have I adored

who followed your path of rejection and desertion!

When I wearied of him, I left him gladly,

and my tears ceased their pouring and streaming.

But the signs of your beauty denied me that, and did not

leave any way but acknowledgment and surrender.

How little a love-stricken man and his misery matter to you

when you toy with livers and minds!
