What of him, when coldness carries him far away,

and parting from the lovesick is his utmost desire?

تاللَه ما أن ينى يباعدنا

بالغدر في جده وفي لعبه

By God, he never tires of keeping us at a distance,

through treachery, in earnest and in play.

إن يصغ للشوق بعد ذاك فقد

إن يصغ للشوق بعد ذاك فقد

أسرف في كبره وفي غضبه

أسرف في كبره وفي غضبه

If he heeds longing after that, he has indeed

gone too far in his pride and his anger.

وكيف يرجو البقاء من رجلٍ

وكيف يرجو البقاء من رجلٍ

لم يبق من وصلةٍ إلى سببه

لم يبق من وصلةٍ إلى سببه

And how can one hope for constancy from a man

who has left no tie by which to reach him?

إن مر لم يكترث لخطرته

إن مر لم يكترث لخطرته

أو قال لم يتلفت إلى خطبه

أو قال لم يتلفت إلى خطبه

If he passes by, his passing goes unheeded;

or speaks, no heed is paid to his words.

قد قل من يصدق الوداد فما

أحس من ودهم سوى كذبه

أحس من ودهم سوى كذبه

Those true in friendship have grown few; I do not

sense anything in their affection but its falsehood.

من مستهل الوفاء منسكبه

من مستهل الوفاء منسكبه

People made me thirsty after they had drunk their fill

from loyalty's pouring rain, its outpouring.

جفوا كما جفت الحاية فما

جفوا كما جفت الحاية فما

أعرف من عودهم سوى حطبه

أعرف من عودهم سوى حطبه

They grew cold as life ran dry; I do not

know their wood as anything but firewood.

مالي وما للزمان واعجبي

واعجب أن يكف عن عجبه

واعجب أن يكف عن عجبه

What ails me, and what ails Time? How I marvel!

And stranger still would be its ceasing its strange ways.

Loyalty's pool has receded in an age

overflowing with calamities that never run dry.

رجال هذا الزمان أخلق به

The air of this age is not what I desire;

the men of this age are better suited to it.

أصحب من لا أود صحبته

ومن أذوق البعاد في قربه

ومن أذوق البعاد في قربه

I keep company with one whose company I do not desire,

and one in whose nearness I taste separation.

لم يبق عندي من الرجاء سوى ال

قنوط من برقه ومن صببه

قنوط من برقه ومن صببه

Nothing remains to me of hope but

despair of its lightning and its downpour,

وزفرةٍ تحطم الضلوع لها

وزفرةٍ تحطم الضلوع لها

على زمان عريت من قشبه

على زمان عريت من قشبه

and a sigh that shatters the ribs,

over a time whose fresh robes I have been stripped of,

وحسرةٍ أثر غلمةٍ ذهبوا

وحسرةٍ أثر غلمةٍ ذهبوا

عنّىً فلج الزمان في حربه

عنّىً فلج الزمان في حربه

and sorrow in the wake of young men who departed

from me, and so Time persisted in its war.

يسرع دمعي إذا ذكرتهم

إسراع فيض الغمام في صببه

إسراع فيض الغمام في صببه

My tears rush whenever I remember them,

with the rush of the clouds' flood as it pours down.

أما فتىً صادق الهوى كأخي

شكري يرد الزمان عن نوبه

Is there no young man true in affection, like my brother

Shukri, to turn Time back from its calamities?

أوثق من تصطفي وأكرم من

Most trustworthy of those you choose, and noblest of those

from whose intellect and learning you draw.

Traits gentle and easygoing,

like cool, sweet water freshly poured.

كم مجلسٍ والوداد ثالثنا

والراح تجلى كالحق من حجبه

والراح تجلى كالحق من حجبه

How many a gathering, with friendship as our third,

and wine unveiled like truth from behind its veils!

ذاك قريبي وليس من رحمي

وهو نسيبي ولست من نسبه

وهو نسيبي ولست من نسبه

That man is my kinsman, though not of my blood;

and he is my relation, though I am not of his lineage.

إن ضرب الذهر بيننا فلقد

لف كما كان قبل شملي به

If Time has come between us, it has indeed

united me with him, as it did before.
