O poet of the soul, how much has her death made you weep

Indeed, you have wept over a foolish, wasteful soul.

You cried over a worn-out ruin

أسبلت آذي عينٍ ما تركت لها

أسبلت آذي عينٍ ما تركت لها

دمعاً يراق على رزء وأوجاع

دمعاً يراق على رزء وأوجاع

You poured out your eye's flood, leaving it without

You shed tears from an aching eye that left nothing for it

A tear to shed over loss and pain.

A tear that flows over misery and pains

آذاك دهرك حتى لست تحفله

آذاك دهرك حتى لست تحفله

فما تبالي بأخماص وأشباع

فما تبالي بأخماص وأشباع

Time has hurt you until you no longer heed it;

Your time has pained you, yet you pay it no heed

So you care nothing for hunger or satiety.

And care not for boons or provisions

واستطعمتك الليالي كل حاذقةٍ

واستطعمتك الليالي كل حاذقةٍ

فما رأت منك إلّا غير مجزاع

فما رأت منك إلّا غير مجزاع

And the nights, each biting one, sought sustenance from you;

The nights have made you taste every skillful one

Yet they saw in you only one who did not panic.

Yet have seen in you nothing but the unyielding

أنا شبيهان في شجوٍ وفي ظلع

أنا شبيهان في شجوٍ وفي ظلع

وراء نجم من الأحلام لماع

وراء نجم من الأحلام لماع

You and I are alike in sorrow and in limping

We are alike in longing and in determination

After a glittering star of dreams.

Behind a star of dreams flashing

كذبت نفسي كما كذبت بارقها

كذبت نفسي كما كذبت بارقها

وكان بالرغم تصديقي لأطماعي

وكان بالرغم تصديقي لأطماعي

I disbelieved my soul, as I disbelieved its lightning;

My soul lied just as it lied about its lightning

Yet, despite myself, I believed my desires.

And despite it all, my beliefs were to my wishes

يسك صوت المنى سمعي وتومض لي

يسك صوت المنى سمعي وتومض لي

ثغرها عن بديع جد خداع

ثغرها عن بديع جد خداع

The voice of wishes deafens my ears, and they flash me

The voice of wishes deafens my hearing and its lips

Their smile, revealing a marvel most deceptive.

Flash before me the most amazing of deceptions

فأنثني غير مخدوع وكم فتنت

فأنثني غير مخدوع وكم فتنت

لي الأماني بإيماءٍ وتلماع

لي الأماني بإيماءٍ وتلماع

So I turn back undeceived—how often have they cast their spell

So I bend, unfooled, and how many times

For me, those hopes, with gestures and gleams!

Have hopes seduced me with a glance and a shine

للَه صرخة وجدٍ أنت مرسلها

للَه صرخة وجدٍ أنت مرسلها

ضاعت عليك بواد غير ممراع

ضاعت عليك بواد غير ممراع

God, what a cry of anguish you send forth,

To God a scream of passion you have sent

Wasted, to your loss, in a barren valley!

Lost to you in a valley with no passage

وما بهم صممٌ لكنهم جهلوا

وما بهم صممٌ لكنهم جهلوا

معنى النداء فضلوا وجهة الداعي

And they are not deaf; rather, they did not understand

They are not deaf, but they did not know

The meaning of the call, and so missed the caller's aim.

The meaning of calling, so missed the caller

إلّا تجبك نفوسٌ لا تعي أبداً

إلّا تجبك نفوسٌ لا تعي أبداً

فقد أجابك قلب السامع الواعي

فقد أجابك قلب السامع الواعي

If souls that never understand do not answer you,

Except for souls that never understand

The understanding listener's heart has indeed answered you.

For your call was answered by the heart of the aware

تدعوا المعاني فتأتي وهي طائعةٌ

تدعوا المعاني فتأتي وهي طائعةٌ

إذا التوين على قدمٍ وجعجاع

إذا التوين على قدمٍ وجعجاع

You summon meanings, and they come obediently,

You call the meanings, obedient they come

When they defy a bold man and a blusterer.

When you lean on a step, limping

يعنو لك اللفظ والمعنى كما امتثلت

يعنو لك اللفظ والمعنى كما امتثلت

هذي العوالم أمر الخالق الراعي

هذي العوالم أمر الخالق الراعي

Word and meaning yield to you, just as did

The words and meaning obey you, just as

These worlds to the command of the Creator, the Shepherd.

These worlds obeyed the order of their Creator
