He sees through the veils of the unseen, so it is as though

he were reading a volume of splendid inscriptions.

He has a wakeful mind that never sleeps,

surging with shells of precious pearls.

Polished like the cheek of dawn, generous like its light,

pure as rain from a massed cloud.

And a spirit so vast that the universe seems

within it a drop in a surging, tumultuous sea.

And a gaze whose arrows seem feathered with lightning,

lighting the edges of all that is dust-gray and dark.

And speech like sunlight, following a similar course,

pouring forth the mind's abundance as rainclouds pour.

grew fragrant with the breaths of smiling mouths.

The flutter of the breeze carries his speech,

and makes it ride the back of the onrushing winds.

So they sweep it through the heights of every leafy grove,

and recite it among the hills and mountain passes.

And scatter it as dewdrops upon the blossoms before dawn,

and inspire it as cooing in the breasts of doves.

    يجاوبها قصف الرعود الغواشم

    And we send it into the air as the cry of one in despair;

the crash of ruthless thunder answers it.

And they bring it forth before the people as a clear dawn,

showing them the path of truth, its landmarks plain.

And poetry is nothing but a cry long imprisoned,

whose echo rings in reticent hearts.

It gently pours the dew of consolation over sorrow,

and at times rekindles extinguished resolve.

So, O garden of love, moistened by the dew of

beauty and embroidered with the light of smiling lips,

let me breathe its fragrance in your shade,

for my life lies in its filling my nostrils.

but my eyelid is like barren wombs.

I shall suffer from the brimming pools of cruel eyes.

And in poetry is solace for the heartsick, and indeed it

surely spares him the downpour of streaming tears.
