Avert your gaze from me, for God's sake, for I

have no strength against the spell of its languor.

How can I recount my plight when

you have fettered my tongue, preventing me from expressing it?

And the rhymes are swift to stray,

and verse is scattered by the one who inspires it.

And it is little, even if the rhymes exalt you,

O beautiful one, whose rain is the source of their seas.

Indeed, the full moon has dominion; the sea submits

and bows to its rule in its affairs.

What strength can ice have against the sun,

when the blaze touches it with its scorching heat?
