I would call to you, if crumbling bones could answer a call,

And weep for you, if streaming tears could avail you.

Does the dead man whom death has snatched care

Whether a friend forgets him or a dear companion mourns him?

Would that I had tears to pour out for you,

But my eyelid, my brother, is barren.

I shall make people weep for you until you think them

Orphans struck by a great calamity the day you departed.

And what can avail the dead man lying in the grave—

Tears that do not endure as days go by?

And suppose they poured in clouds through all the days—

Would their downpour bring back a dead man, that he might rise?

And how could I repay your sweet companionship with weeping,

Even if my eye streamed blood?

Away, then, with this life after parting from you!

There is no bliss in a life from which you have gone.

And no welcome to a dwelling where you do not live,

Even were its building's bricks stars.

    فصرت وأيامي لبعدك شيم

    I knew you when the days were white and fair;

Now I am left with days blackened by your absence.

As though we were the ones who died—who feels death's pain

But the living, not the departed, who is unharmed?

The cheated one among men is not he whom death has taken,

But he whom it misses, who remains behind.

Were the dead given a choice, not one would choose

    Life, nor call death blameworthy.

Death's mention and its blow terrify a young man,

While crumbling bones recoil at the mention of life.

    على الموت منا هجمةٌ وقدوم

    We were created, not knowing for what purpose;

Ours is a headlong rush and advance toward death.

And every man in life is seeking some goal,

While behind him stands death, a creditor.

Ah, man's misery! His striving makes him reap

The fruits of loathed death—yet death is bliss.

I have seen nothing like life, whose blossoms are death,

Nor a storm wind like death, though it is a breeze.

I lied to you: I did not grieve for you, though

A cruel arrow of fate struck your heart.

You escaped this world—a deliverance I envied

You, though the parting is painful.

The nights pass; you do not feel their vicissitudes.

Would that I had long been among the dead!

As though no sore had ever made your flanks reel,

    Nor worries ever heaved beneath your ribs;

Nor had you gladdened my heart in this world,

Nor become a calamity that overwhelmed a steadfast man.

As though your foot had never carried you, even once,

Toward some aim in life you sought and pursued.

As though neither cold nor flame had ever hurt you,

    Nor dark night ever returned after day;

Nor had friends at their evening gathering been regaled

By an eloquent speaker, nor had a drinking companion shared pure wine.

As though you had never been created, save that hearts

Remembering you are torn apart by grief for you.

You were given death to drink in the bloom of life and youth,

And a sinner tied the bags shut over what they held.

Alas for man: he lives and passes away,

As though no tender mother had bequeathed him life.

    فنفس الفتى عونٌ له وخصيم

    We are only those who rush headlong upon death;

For a man's own soul is his helper and his foe.

    وللموت جذبٌ لو فطنت وخيم

    And every man's appointed hour drives him toward death;

And death has a baleful pull, if you would but perceive it.

No one endures; soon we shall be enfolded,

With you, by earth's belly—itself made of bodies.

I had thought that death would take me

    Before you—but time is base.
