    ولا تتركني في العذاب أخلد

    Ah, return to the days I used to praise;

and do not leave me to dwell forever in torment.

I left you—not because I had forgotten my love for you,

but because I fear the one I have come to worship.

I love you, but I fear you; and love

is fearsome, and some honor is found in goodness.

Yet your nearness and separation are alike,

if no one among you shows me affection.

Your companions laugh with you in [unclear] and delight,

so you make merry, while grief and yearning make me weep.

How can I blame a heedless one who does not feel for us,

when I lend my aid to what pains the heart?

And does it help me that I am discreet, and that I am

disdainful, and that I am patient and steadfast?

Ah, in God's cause, a night I spent awake,

and my tears upon both cheeks a neatly strung strand.

My night companion is my anxiety, and my friends are thoughts

dark as the night—or darker still.

    وأكتم حتى عنك سرى وأبعد

    I fear for you that people will gossip about us;

and I hide my secret even from you, and keep away.

And what has eased for me the burning anguish I endure

is my certainty that distance is wiser and more prudent.

And how can I hope for moisture from you to quench my burning thirst [wording uncertain],

while my breast is sealed upon the agonizing secret?

A surging sea has burst forth between us,

where death keeps foaming and thundering.

I fear its terror for myself if I embark upon it,

yet my soul draws me toward it and leads me in.

So I approach, with many hopes in you,

and turn away, with terrors lying in wait for my soul.

And I fear slumber, when every dream is terrifying,

and I fear death, for everything poses a threat.

Because of you, diversions have deserted me, though you may be

affectionate, befriending everyone who shows affection.

The birds of hearts sing together, except for the one

whose song bewilders humankind and warbles on.

And in generosity you are like the morning breeze:

it kisses whatever appears before it, and cools it.

Have you not seen how lovely the flowers are,

and how tomorrow their rosy bloom will bring them harm?

Their beauty delights you, yet they

wither if they come to be turned about by a hand.

Likewise, you will wither after a while; so do not be

a goal within reach of every ardent seeker.

And do not grant affection to one unworthy of it,

for not every water with a gleaming face is a watering place.
