Our inner feelings have grown distant, though our homes are near.

So what lies between you and me has no end.

I had thought I had in you someone who loved me,

when blazing obligations hemmed me in.

But when your treacherous aversion became clear to me,

I accepted what you decreed, unjust though it was.

So do not reproach me for my coldness, for I

hold my heart too noble to be seen abased.

I loved you with a heart innocent of reason,

yet with sound reason I am surely leaving you.

Love's shade shrank after spreading wide,

and our love dried up after once flourishing.

The ways of disloyalty and its treachery transformed it

into bygone days that remembering hearts lament.

As though heartache, despair, sleeplessness, and wasting

were debts owed by anyone illumined by a glance from you.

Yet anguish and joy are alike,

for the revolving nights efface them both.

You will learn that beauty does not last,

and that shining eyes will one day become sunken.

Blemishes will turn their hearts away from you,

and tomorrow the treacherous glances will turn away from you.

I can almost see this beauty with its freshness dried up,

and the dazzling light in the eye sockets faded.

It tries to capture hearts as it once did,

and asks them to yearn, though they recoil.

    فليتك مثلي إن تقاضاك صابر

    You will see me steadfast against time, knowing its ways;

would that you were patient like me, if it called you to account.

Would that you—[unclear word] upon the heart—had not lost your worth

to us; yet for that I am grateful.

If you turn away, beauty is abundant,

and how cheap is anything of which we have counterparts!

Time has folded away the love between you and me,

and no one can unfold what your time folds away.

    My only regret is for my infatuation with you;

so will anyone excuse me for that offense?

I cast you off as one casts off a sandal whose leather is worn out,

and I am certainly capable of doing the like.

When God desires mercy for a person,

then harm's arrow veers wide of fortune's mark.

Fate has indeed shielded my soul from what

you plot, and reversals have circled back upon it.

Take care: do not let your ignorance destroy you; I

am easygoing, but capable of evil.

I am indeed a viper, soft to the touch, and I have

    deadly fangs supported by claws.

If I wished you harm, far-ranging verses would suffice for you:

a slayer among them would confront you wherever they might be.

But I have turned a blind eye to you out of generosity,

though your sins and offenses have multiplied.

So depart, enriched by pardon from one who, when he shoots,

breaks what the days can never mend.

And strangely, in your folly you reject love poetry,

yet that harms no noble person other than you.

Would that I knew—and wonders are many—

does it please you that a poet is goaded into reviling you?

Did my open display of love deceive you about me?

Vanity would not let a bird remain in your nest.

So you went about telling people of my infatuation,

claiming that I am in love, and boasting.

Take care: do not make my love a pretext

for something you hope to gain, as though you were a merchant.

I have opened the springs of tears; weep now with four eyes,

    while the hostile enemy grins.

I have set war's mill turning against you; its grist

is your chastity—consider what calamity you must beware.

And say: May God have mercy on peace and hopes,

and on a lush life of ease that fate cut short.
