O hour in which I delighted in his beauty,

I implore you: may other hours like you return.

And I well know that distance offers rest

to one whom bewitching eyes ensnare.

But I have tried both nearness to you and separation,

and my mind found no peace, nor did my eye's rim dry.

My heart relished neither the taste of nearness nor of separation,

nor did my thoughts sleep in either state.

And I am only like someone deceiving himself—

a man may deceive his soul even while aware.

You pass by us like a dream whose span is shortened

by its sweetness, till you seem a bird.

Do I love you or loathe you? By God, I

truly do not know what inmost hearts enfold.

And at the thought of you a yearning overtakes me,

as a traveling stranger yearns for his family.

For you are my hell in life and my paradise,

and you are my enemy and the beloved who supports me.

And you are the first thing that crosses my mind,

and you are the last thing a thought calls up.

You filled the soul's ravines until you glutted it

and its imaginings; the soul is a desolate desert.

Ah, for the time of forgetfulness and its sweetness!

And ah for it whenever one who remembers moans or yearns!

That love is a bag of evil—wretched is what

the fates make me carry through life.

I see that, despite its pleasures and bliss,

a flash from it and [an unclear image] take us by surprise.

And can pleasures—some of them—be bought except

with bleeding pain and with what we dread?

I do not seek the magic of eyes that seem,

    when they meet my gaze, like shining stars;

nor the freshness of the smooth cheek, as though

    fresh roses had nourished it through the ages;

nor the mouth when it rounds, as though

it had readied itself for kissing, while longing rages.

For a radiant glance may burn, and choking is the

fragrance, and rounded mouths may bring you to ruin.

But when my inner tumult rises, I seek only

a heart to confide in and a mind to converse with at night,

and a heart in which my inmost self can rest,

to which I pour out my sorrow and turn for counsel,

as once a bee fluttered over the flowers

and kept sharing love's complaints with them and darting about.

    ففي حيثما سرحت طرفي مقابر

    I spent my life among the traces of those who passed away;

so wherever I let my gaze roam, there are graves.

Those are my brothers, the ones I choose,

and I favored them with affection, my heart bewildered.

Alas for the living man who finds no delight

in people, save those whom grave-pits embrace!

I deceive myself about them and cheat myself,

and both a sincere adviser and a schemer among them deceive me.

And I have no concern with them save that

my condition resembles theirs and matches it.

O visitor, whom I would ransom with my life, if he only knew,

come to me, and be my aid when a helper betrays me.

I buried my life alive in my youth, against my will,

and my eyes had not had their fill of what they love.

But between me and my watering places

stands a barrier, and the ways out have been closed to me.

Return to me, for I cannot choose my course,

and stand by me, for one true to his pledge is grateful.

And, if you wish, suppose me a dead man whom you visit:

does not a man who dies have a visitor?
