Go on, Abd al-Rahman—you have fanned embers,
Oh Abd al-Rahman, you have rekindled embers
where you thought you would pour forth patience.
When you decided to empty out patience

فكأنso it is as though التعذالreproach للدمعto tears أغرىmore inciting
I find my tears flow more freely after your counsel,
After your advice, I find tears flowing
as though reproach spurred the tears still more.
As if grief made tears more tempting

I do not weep for her loss—God knows—
I do not cry for losing her, God knows
even though this calamity is a first.
Even if the calamity was early

And she is part of me; if I weep, there is an excuse
She's a part of me, so if I cried, it's excused
for a father whose breast is constricted by calamity.
For a father whose chest tightened with misery

كالزندlike a fire-stick كلماwhenever لزit is pressed أورىit sparks
Yet tears give voice to sorrows,
Except that tears express sorrows
like a fire-stick that sparks whenever it is pressed.
Like flint whenever it's struck, it sparked

It is no wonder, as calamities mount,
It's not strange, with accumulating calamities
that the tear-ducts should flow more abundantly.
That matters become heavier and more burdensome

The days have trained me in melodies of sorrow,
The days have made me adept in the tunes of sadness
so I strung tears into poetry for people.
So I composed tears for people in poetry

Against my will, the clouds of my tears poured down,
Despite me, my teardrops poured down
and unwillingly I disobeyed patience's command.
And against my will, disobeyed the order of patience

Calamities scorched me in the barren waste of life,
Hardships have made my eyes swell in the heat of affliction
and I found no rainwater but my tears.
And I did not find anything but my tears to pour out

There is nothing against one whose strength calamities have slackened—
Do not blame the one whose strength is weakened by calamities
no blame, if you do not find him unyielding.
If he did not find a way out

The eyelid was created as a passage for tears,
The eyelid was created as an outlet for tears
not prisons for their outpouring, nor a grave.
Not as prisons and graves for their outpouring

So spare me the blame, my friend, for I
am too proud to hold back tears out of pride.
Am too pained to restrain the flow of tears

It is no easy thing for me to have returned alone,
It's not easy for me, now that I've lost a monkey
lamenting loneliness and aching from severance.
To complain of loneliness and be hurt by separation

Forever, regrets keep assaulting my conscience
by pangs of grief that pursue and charge anew.

So go, like spring, which departed and left
So farewell, like the spring, and leave for me
a trace among us, even if only a memory.
A trace between us, even if just a memory
