توددت لا أني إليك فقير
ولاnor أنthat بعداًdistance عنfrom ذراكyour shelter عسيرdifficult
ولا أن بعداً عن ذراك عسير
I courted you—not because I stand in need of you,
I showed affection, not because I am in need of you,
Nor because it is hard to be far from your sheltering shade;
nor because distance from your shelter is hard.
ولاand do not تحسبنsuppose منحيكmy giving you وديmy affection لحاجةout of need

ولا أن سحراً في العيون يمور
Do not suppose I gave you my love to satisfy a need,
Do not suppose I give you my affection out of need,
Nor because some magic surges in the eyes.
nor that a spell swirls within the eyes.

Easy now: beauty is no exclusive preserve of yours,
Easy now: beauty is not reserved for you alone,
And most of what conjecture dictates is delusion.
and most of what conjectures dictate is delusion.

Not every beauty’s magic can weaken the heart,
Not every beauty's spell enraptures the heart,
Nor is every water wholesome and fit for purification.
nor is all water beneficial and purifying.

Your equals are not so few that you could turn me aside,
You are not so rare in your kind that you should strut,
Acting coy over a quality whose likes are plentiful.
vaunting what has so many counterparts.

Likewise, the full moon is not alone in the universe:
Likewise, the full moon is not alone in the universe;
For there are suns besides it, and full moons.
for there are suns besides it, and full moons.

Yet I fashioned an image of beauty,
But I fashioned an image of beauty,
And you alone among humankind are its likeness.
and you alone among humankind are its counterpart.

So do not suppose your distance causes me pain,
So do not suppose I am pained by your absence,
Or that being near you holds any joy for me.
nor that my nearness to you holds joy.

له دون أحناء الضلوع سفور
Enough for me is a beauty my thoughts have fashioned;
Enough for me is a beauty my thoughts have pictured;
It stands unveiled, unlike the beloveds harbored in the breast.
it reveals itself within the curves of my ribs.

أنيس إذا عز الأنيس سمير
When the wounded heart grows lonely, that imagined beauty is indeed
If the wounded heart grows lonely, then it is
A familiar friend—and, when companionship is scarce, a companion by night.
a companion when companions are scarce, a friend for night-time talk.

فإني على غدر الصحاب صبور
Though I remain in my wilderness, amid estrangement and loathing,
If you have thought of estrangement and aversion,
I am steadfast before the treachery of friends.
then I am patient in the face of friends' betrayal.

A longing from me will remain yours as long as time endures—
My affection for you will remain for all time—
Yet that, if you only knew, is falsehood and a lie.
and that, if you knew, is falsehood and a lie.

وكلٌّ عليه الدائرات تدور
For every flourishing thing in life is bound for withering,
For everything fresh in life is bound to wither,
And fortune’s reversals come round upon everything.
and misfortunes circle around each one.

The days will make me forget what I now feel,
The days will make me forget what I feel,
And love’s wounds and sores will fade away.
and love's wounds and blisters will fade away.
