The year has carried away spring and clear weather,
The year has passed with spring and wakefulness
and dreaded winter has come.
And winter has come, fearful
فأيso which أصواتكyour voices القدائمancient ياO قلبheart
أناجيI commune with بهاthrough them الشآبيباthe rain showers
So which of your ancient voices, O heart,
So which of your old voices, oh heart
shall I use to commune with the rain showers?
Shall I murmur with to the youths?

And what use to me is the melody I send forth,
And what is the use of a melody I send forth
when no one hears the rapturous strains?
When there is none to hear the songs?

Where? And does sorrow help the anguished one,
Where, and does the wounded grief of sorrow help
when it deepens the frown on life's face?
Add more creases to the face of life?

Gauzy veils I scattered with my own hand
Locks I have scattered with my hands
from the light of my life—and I returned bereft.
From the light of my life, and returned despoiled

counted for something in this world.
Would have been something in life, esteemed

Then calamities turned me into a sigh,
Yet tribulations made me a chanter
just as Time stirred Niobe.
As the days of time brought distress

I marvel at fortune: did its apportioner
Wondrous is fate! Did its partitioner
intend it—woe to us!—to be full of wonders?
Intend our woe to be so wondrous?

فكلso every شيءٍthing نراهwe see it مطلوباdesired
He gave us a generous share of hope,
More generous than an arrow of hope for us
so everything we see is something we desire.
Everything we see is yearned for

But he has made our power meager;
But it has debased our status
oh, if only what he willed were reversed!
If only what it willed were reversed!

فلنso will not ينالattain الفؤادthe heart مرغوباanything desired
A wealth of wishes, and a poverty of power—
Wealth is security, and poverty ordained fate
so the heart will gain nothing it desires.
So the heart shall not attain what it desires
