O Beauty, alas for the radiant verses

I perfected in your praise—indeed, for whole chapters!

I wore out for you a mind and its freshness,

and life, in the days of youth and childhood.

O you whose beauty speaks, who will help its lover

with speech as concise as beauty?

O smiling mouth, who will help your frowning counterpart

with a torrent like the downpour of streaming clouds?

O carefree one, indeed your troubled counterpart

has hope's thread bound to memories.

O tranquil soul, the one whose soul is in revolt—

your love-worn lover—has become as one dead, unheard of.

Grief has kept him from his desires,

like an eagle crippled by the tremor of old age.

His breaths are a broken sigh,

as though he had been stricken with breathlessness.

He stays forever in the coal-blackness of night,

    bewildered, sending forth thought's scout.

How did my foot carry me to you?

If only the questioner of fate could get an answer!

I wonder, do dreams show him his lover,

bewildered of mind among the images?

Oh, if only in sleep I could cross the unseen to him

and fold away the distance of estrangement.

My phantom would rise like dawn, breaking free

from darkness in the gauzy robes of the predawn.

I would say: the tormented one has come to you in waking

and sleep, and throughout the whole span of life.

O flower of beauty, why does its fragrance

miss us, while its piercing needles do not?

Is there not an end to passion and sorrow?

For everything I see has a lifespan.

O you who turn your shoulder away, less pride! For

life is a visit to water with a muddied return.

How paltry a thing that a shroud enfolds,

and that is folded into dust and clods.

Are you a statue with no life within it?

Surely one who seeks life in images goes astray.

No wonder you should be harsh,

O tender in beauty, O brother of the houris.

The soul, like life, is a battlefield

    where some graces overpower others.

O year that time has carried off—yet

the age's vicissitudes have destroyed none but us.

Would that, of a time gone by, we could say farewell

to its cares, which return in memory.

Or would that a youth were made to forget his experiences,

all of them, by the driver of evenings and mornings,

turning his back on the year, with no memory of it,

    and facing another without fear,

until it were as though it had never been, nor had Time

visited his heights with serenity and sorrow.

It left us sorrow's dust and passed away—

a year that revolved through nothing but terrors.

You who congratulate me on the new span of my days:

the year has left me without desire.

It left me weary, groaning from anguish,

finding no rest in my distress.

    ما أوجع الدمع غير منهمر

    My eyes flooded, yet not overflowing;

how painful are tears that do not flow!

Shivering, I still seek the sun,

but alas—there is nothing but bitter cold.

Life's harvest is dry stubble—ah, my grief

for the fresh, fluttering growth of my tree!

That is past; will a coming year bring me compensation

for one departing, receding with its hurt,

reviving my delight, as summer does

    just after winter and rain,

so the soul may frolic in love's gardens,

    laden with fruit and flowers,

and a fresh flower may gladden the heart,

whose youth made its beauty need no pearls?

Bring it, give me drink, companion—ah, my thirst!

Until you see me forget all I remember.

    Songs of sorrow, however lovely,

are earthly, companion; so keep them brief.

    منطقنا صرخةٌ من الخور

    Our passionate sorrows have made us children again;

our speech is a cry of weakness.

We seek the light wherever it may be sought—

in vain, with fortune utterly overcast.

    Were our bygone pleasures

as sweet in experience as we imagined?

The spring of clear daylight has

its shimmering water crowded with darkness like islands.

But illusion is a skilled polisher,

making glass's glitter seem like pearls.

And a man holds the past in higher regard

for its remoteness, or for the barrier of change.

Yet a young man's breast surges; what

can compare with poetry that comes unforced?

As a destitute man huddles in dry brush,

having found nothing else in the chill darkness.

My mind is your beauty's sanctuary, and within it

is your image, apart from all mankind.

And, in my weariness, my thought chants like a monk

the verses of your fragrant beauty.

I shall surely build an altar, and make my offering

my heart; my yearning has not ended.

If its fire should fade, I would snap for it

the bough of hopes, for it bears no fruit.

So accept my heart for your face's beauty, as an

offering, for it has been my choicest treasure.
