- أبا الخير المفيد لكل خيرO Abu al-Khayr, who bestows every good
- أبى الله إلا أن تجود وتنعماGod has willed only that you give generously and bestow favors,
- أبينا أن نطيعكم أبيناWe refused to obey you—we refused.
- أتنساها على خيفDo you forget them at the Khayf
- أحاط بى العذال حتى صرفتهمThey surrounded me with advice until I repelled them
- إحدى الكواعب من بنى نصرOne of the budding-breasted maidens of Banu Nasr,
- إذا فتن الإنسان يوما بمنظرIf ever someone is captivated by a sight,
- إذا كان هذا الجهل قد شاع في الورىIf this ignorance has spread among humankind,
- إذا نثر الناس الهرقلية الصفراWhen people scatter saffron,
- ارجع إلى ما أنت أهل لهReturn to what you are fit for:
- أرى الأموال في اللؤماء تثوِيI see wealth dwelling among the ignoble,
- أضدان في جسد واحدTwo opposites in a single body,
- أظنك تبتغى حلب الثغورI think you yearn for Aleppo of the frontier marches,
- أقسم بالعاديات ضبحاI swear by the steeds that gallop panting,
- أكذا يجازى ود كل قرينIs this how every companion’s affection is repaid,
- أكرم بوجه الراكب المعنقHow noble is the face of the hurrying rider!
- ألكم إلى رد الشباب سبيلHave you a way to restore youth,
- النجاء النجاء من أرض نجدFlee, flee from the land of Najd,
- إن لم أكن من راضعى الخمرThough I am not among those suckled on wine,
- أؤمل بعد هذا الأسر حلاI hope for release after this captivity,
- أى لبيب بك لم يخدعWhat wise person has not been deceived by you?
- أيا بؤس قوم حسان الشخوصAlas for a people, handsome in form,
- أيا ولد الحصين وما حصينO son of al-Ḥuṣayn—and what is Ḥuṣayn?
- بالجزع ذى السمرات لى قمرAt the valley bend with its acacia trees, I have a moon;
- بتنا على الزوراء نهدم ماWe spent the night at al-Zawra tearing down what
- بدا ضاحكا لا لأحظى بماHe appeared smiling—not that I might win
- بعينيك إضرامهم للأكمBefore your very eyes, they set the hillocks ablaze
- تخاوصت الحسناء عن شيب لمتىThe fair one quarreled with me over the gray in my locks,
- ترى رائح يأتى بأخبار من غداDo you see an evening traveler bringing news of one who departed at dawn?
- تزاحم في صدرى القوافى ولا أرىRhymes crowd my breast, yet I see
- تزاورن عن أذرعات يميناThey veered rightward away from Adhri'at,
- تسائلنى درعى أهذى هي النبلMy armor asks me, “Are these the arrows?”
- تسعى بنا قدم الرجاء وما الذيThe foot of hope carries us onward—but what
- تظن فراقا أن تثار حمولYou think it parting when the laden camels are roused.
- تعاب معاشر وكلوا البراياSome people are blamed for entrusting humankind
- تفيض نفوس بأوصابهاSouls expire from their afflictions,
- تقاعست عن أبناء دهرى عائفاI held back from the sons of my time, disdaining
- تمدح عمروا وتريد رفداYou praise Amr and seek a gift.
- جاريت في الحب أطلاقا بلا أمدI raced in love against unbridled steeds, with no end,
- حرام على طروق الديارIt is forbidden for me the does of the forest
- دست الوزارة يبتغى حجراThe vizierate’s seat seeks a stone
- ذات أيد ثلاثة أبد الدهرShe has three arms; for all time
- رأيت الحب ليس ينال إلاI have seen that love can only be won
- زمان فاسد النظرAn age whose judgment is corrupt;
- زوج اللهو يابنة العنقودMirth has given you in marriage, O daughter of the grape cluster,
- سنحن كما اعترض الربربThey appeared like a herd of gazelles crossing one's path,
- شدوا على ظهر الصبا رحلىFasten my saddle upon the back of youth;
- شككت وقد زارنى غلطةI was unsure when he visited me by mistake:
- صبحها الدمع ومساها الأرقHer tears adorned her, and insomnia dressed her,
- ضيوف ابن فضلان سواء نهارهمFor Ibn Fadlan’s guests, their day is the same
- عتب الشريف لأن نشرت محاسناThe Sharif reproached me because I made known virtues
- عذب من الماء قد سدت مواردهSweet water whose sources have been barred—
- عزاء فما يصنع الجازعTake comfort: what can the grief-stricken do?
- عساها تنجلى وخلاك ذمMay it clear away, with no blame upon you,
- علقتها حماء مصقولةI fell for her, a dark beauty—my burnished one;
- على من تبيع متاع الأدبTo whom do you sell the wares of literature,
- عينى التي علقت حبائلكم بهاMy eyes which your ropes have attached
- عيوب لابن مالك قد كفتنىIbn Malik's faults have spared me
- غدا تراها جنحا على الغضاTomorrow you will see them leaning upon the ghada trees,
- غراء تحسبها غمودا كلماA radiant cloud you take for scabbards whenever
- فر من الحب قلبه فنجاHis heart fled from love and escaped,
- قالوا ابن دارستنا وزيرThey said, “Our Ibn Darast is a vizier.”
- قالوا ابن مالك قرنان فقلت لهمThey said, “Ibn Mālik is a cuckold,” so I said to them:
- قالوا ذر الشعر وكن عائداThey said, "Abandon poetry and be content
- قالوا وزيران هوى نجم ذاThey said: Two viziers—that one's star has fallen,
- قد بان عذرك والخليط مودعYour excuse is now plain, as the companions are bidden farewell,
- قد حصلنا من الماش كما قيOur gain from al-Māsh is as was
- قد رجع الحق إلى نصابهRight has returned to its rightful place,
- قد طال للماطل أن يقتضىIt is long past time for the stalling debtor to be pressed for payment,
- قد عاد بدر الدجى إلى فلكهIndeed, the full moon of night has returned to his orbit,
- قد علمت ليلة الحمى ورعىThe night at al-Ḥimā has known my piety,
- قل لابن جابر الذي جعل اللهSay to Ibn Jabir, for whom God has made
- قل لابن قران مقالة ناصحTell the son of Qurran a wise man's advice
- قلت لعمرو جذلاI said to ʿAmr, rejoicing:
- قلقل ركابك في الفلاSet your mounts moving in the wilderness,
- قوم كئوسهم السيوف وخمرهمA people whose cups are swords, and whose wine
- كان الوداد منغصا لوشاتناOur affection was a vexation to our slanderers,
- كان الوداد منغصا لوشاتناAffection vexed our slanderers,
- كان الوداد منغصا لوشاتناThe love we shared was blissful,
- كل يوم خل يرحل عناEvery day a friend is carried away from us,
- كما قلتما برء الصبابة في الياسAs you both said, youth’s innocence lies in despair,
- لا أعذر المرء يصبو وهو مختارI do not excuse a man who falls in love while free to choose.
- لا تظنن بي سلوا وإن كنتDo not ever think me free of longing, even if I
- لا تغتبط يا بن الحصين بصبيةDo not exult, O son of al-Ḥuṣayn, in children
- لا مجد إلا للإمام القائمGlory belongs only to Imam al-Qa'im,
- لا مرية في الردى ولا جدلThere is no doubt about death, nor any dispute.
- لا يهن عندك اختلال بجسمىDo not take the disorder in my body lightly,
- لأى مرمى تزجر الأيانقاTo what destination do you urge the she-camels?
- لجاجة قلب ما يفيق غرورهاThe persistence of a heart whose delusion never wakes,
- لحى ابن دارست على إمساكهIbn Darast was reproached for his stinginess.
- لست أقضى إذا رأيتك نذراI fulfill no vow when I see you
- لقاؤك يا لبنى خيالMeeting you, O Lubna, is a phantom;
- لم أبك أن رحل الشباب وإنماI did not weep because youth had departed, but rather
- لو كنت أشفق من خضيب بنانHad I feared one with henna-stained fingertips,
- لو يهتدى وصفى إلى شغفىIf my description could find its way to my passion,
- ليت الهوى يصرفه الراقىWould that the spell-healer could dispel love,
- ليحيى بن عبد الله عرس كريمةYahya ibn Abd Allah has a noble wife,
- ما زال يكشف عنى كل طارقةThey have never ceased to ward off every calamity from me—
- ما ضاع من أيامنا هل يغرمCan what is lost of our days be repaid?
- ما فاز بالحمد ولا نالهNo one has won praise or attained it
- ما يصنع المستسر بالغابThe one lurking in the thicket does not do
- ماذا يعيب رجال الحى في الناديWhat do the tribesmen find fault with in the assembly,
- مرض بقلبك ما يعادA sickness in your heart goes unvisited,
- من رأى المجد يثير القلاصاWho has seen glory rouse the young she-camels,
- من علم القلب ما يملى من الغزلWho taught the heart what is dictated in love verse?
- نبئت أن فلانا قد شحا فمهI was told that so-and-so had tightened his mouth,
- نظرت ولم أبغ إلا شفائيI looked, seeking nothing but my cure,
- هززناكم بالمدح نجنى ثماركمWe shook you with praise to gather your fruits,
- هل تعرف الحسناء تفخرDo you know the beauty who takes
- هل في جنوب اللوى وجد فأطربهIs there longing in al-Liwā's flanks, stirring it
- هو منزل النجوى بخالي الأعصرIt is the abode of intimate converse in bygone ages.
- ودادك في قلبي ألذ من المنىYour affection in my heart is more delightful than wishes,
- وددت التصابى فيك إذ كان عاذرىI wished to meet you when my excuse was present
- وزير رضى من بأسه وانتقامهA minister content to let his might and vengeance
- وسلافة بزلت فأبرز دنهاAnd a choice wine was tapped, so its jar revealed
- وعيشكم لا ورد الحومBy your lives, may the thirsty circlers never reach
- وقائل لم هجرت الشعر من زمنA critic asked, “Why have you abandoned poetry for so long?”
- وليلة قد نسجت ريحهاAnd a night whose wind had woven
- يا آل عوف أنجدوا الصباO house of Awf, come to the lovesick one's aid!
- يا حسن مغداك وطيب الرواحHow lovely your morning departure, and how pleasant the evening journey!
- يا درة البحر لو أنصفت نفسك ماO pearl of the sea, had you done yourself justice, you would not
- يا شهوة النوم وما لدتهO longing for sleep—and what is its delight?
- يا صحابي واين منى صحبىMy friends, where are my friends
- يا طيب يوم حجبت شمسهO the loveliness of a day whose sun was veiled
- يا كاهن الحب خبرنى من الجانىO diviner of love, tell me who is to blame:
- يا ليتهم حين صيروا خدماOh, if only, when they made servants
- يا ماء لينة لو نقعت أوامىO water of Līnah, if only you quenched my burning thirst,
- يروح ويغدو علينا الحمامDeath visits us evening and morning,
- يسأئلني ما حاجتي في ديارهHe asks me what I need in his dwellings—
- يقولون راجع صاحب الرأى واطرحThey say: consult a man of sound judgment, and cast aside
