You ask me to brighten my words about you, yet what
can an embellisher add to the striping of patterned cloaks?
بلrather كلُّall مدحِكpraise of you أمرٌa task ليسis not منwithin حِيلىmy powers
وكنْهُand the essence وصفكof describing you ثِقلٌa burden ليسnot فيwithin آدىmy strength
Rather, praising you fully is a task beyond my powers,
and describing your essence is a burden beyond my strength.
إنَّindeed القوافىrhymes وإنand even if جاشتsurged غواربُهاtheir crests
لاnot يُستطاهis possible بهاwith them تحويلُmoving أطوادِmountains
Rhymes, though their crests surge high,
cannot move mountains.
فإنso if رضيتَyou are content بميسورىwith what I can offer فهاءِthen take حُلىًjewels
مَصُوغةfashioned بينbetween أفكاريmy thoughts وإنشاديand my recitation
If you are content with what I can offer, take these jewels,
fashioned between my thoughts and my recitation.
فلنfor never will تعوزَيدَfail the hand of الغوَّاصthe diver منfrom صدفىmy oyster shells
فريدةٌa peerless pearl وُسِّطتْset in the middle فيin سِلكthe thread عقَّادِof a necklace-stringer
The diver's hand shall never lack, from my shells,
a peerless pearl set in a necklace-stringer's thread.
أُعابُI am faulted بالشعرfor poetry لاnot أبغىI seek بهthrough it عِوضاrecompense
ولاand not يُعابare faulted أناسٌpeople غيرُnot أجوادِgenerous
I am faulted for poetry, though I seek no recompense through it,
while ungenerous people go unblamed.
لكنّنيbut I فيam among أناسٍpeople إنif سألتُهُمُI ask them
لمnot يعرفواthey know الفرقthe difference بينbetween الظاءthe letter ẓāʾ والضادِand the letter ḍād
But I am among people who, if I ask them,
cannot tell the difference between ẓāʾ and ḍād.
ماas long as دمتَyou remain سمعاan ear وعيناand an eye فيin الزمانthis age لناfor us
فكلُّthen all أيامِهits days أيامُdays أعيادof festivals
As long as you remain our ear and eye in this age,
all its days are days of festival.
