يقولون راجعْ صاحبَ الرأى واطَّرحْ
هواكَyour passion فماfor ... not تُغنىavail الدموعُthe tears السواجمstreaming
هواكَ فما تُغنى الدموعُ السواجم
They say: consult a man of sound judgment, and cast aside
They say return to the wise man and cast off
your passion, for streaming tears are of no avail.
your passion though tears avail not the sleepless eyes
ولوand if أنهthat it were the case بالعقلby reason يَعشَقloves passionately عاشقٌa lover
ولو أنه بالعقل يَعشَق عاشقٌ
لماthen ... would not ازدوجتْhave paired أطيارُهاits birds والبهاتمُand the beasts (probable reading)
لما ازدوجتْ أطيارُها والبهاتمُ
And if a lover loved by reason,
If a lover did love with reason
its birds and the beasts would not have paired.
His birds would not pair nor night voices lament
أليستare they not? علىover أُلاّقهاtheir mates (probable reading) بجهالةٍin ignorance
أليست على أُلاّقها بجهالةٍ
يحاربُfights شِبْهٌone of the same kind شِبهَهُits like ويخاصِمُand quarrels
يحاربُ شِبْهٌ شِبهَهُ ويخاصِمُ
Is it not over their mates, in ignorance,
Is it not in their own ignorance
that one creature fights its like and quarrels?
That phantom contends with phantom and rival with rival
