غزالٌa gazelle بأوطارof desires الفؤادthe heart عليمُwell aware
He asks me what I need in his dwellings—
He asks me what my need is in his abode
a gazelle well versed in the heart's desires.
A gazelle, knowing the regions of my heart
ستشهدُwill testify ليfor me عيناهhis two eyes أنهماthat they both are الهوىlove
ومبسمُهand his smiling mouth أنىّthat I عليهover it أحومُI hover
His eyes will testify for me that they are love itself,
His eyes will testify that it is love
and his smiling mouth, that I hover over it.
And his smile that I yearn for him
أتُظهِرُdo you display فيin عرفانِknowing ماwhat بيin me جهالةًignorance
وماand not أَحدٌanyone فيamong الناسpeople منكfrom you سليمُsafe
Do you feign ignorance of what you know ails me,
Shall I feign ignorance of what ails me
when no one among humankind is safe from you?
When no one among people is free of you
وكيفand how يداوِىcures داءَthe disease قلبىَmy heart باخلٌa miser
علىtoward طَرِفهِhis eye بالبُرءwith a cure وهوwhile it is سقيمُsick
And how can a miser cure my heart's disease,
How can one who is sick himself cure the illness of my heart
begrudging his own eye a cure, though it is sick?
His remedy being the malady itself
أرقِّعI patch up فيكfor you الودَّthe love وهوthough it is ممزَّقٌtorn
وأرعَىand I uphold ذمامَthe obligation العهدِthe pledge وهوthough it is ذميمُblameworthy
I patch up my love for you, though it is torn,
I patch up affection though it's torn
and uphold the pledge's obligation, though it merits reproach.
And hold the reins of the covenant though frail
وفيand in دونless than ماwhat لاقيتُI have endured للمرءfor a person زاجرٌa deterrent
ولكنَّand yet عِرْقىmy root فيin الوفاءfidelity قديمُancient
And less than what I have endured would deter a man,
Without what I have endured, one would desist
yet my roots in fidelity go far back.
But my lineage in loyalty is ancient
