With ire fills the ear of one who bears you enmity.

It is as though, when my tongue rinses itself with praise,
So when you rinse your mouth with wine for me
I swirl wine within my mouth.
My tongue revolves as liquor in the mouth.

Sleep visits no eye when you set out,
No sleep visits the eye when you have gone,
nor does the heart dwell within the breast.
Nor can the heart in a lonely chest find rest,

How could a land not shudder when you turn
Why should not the land shudder when you turn
away from it, while another finds comfort in you?
From it, at ease with another, spurning its embrace?

If it could run when you left it,
If, when you slipped away, the land set out in quest,
it would set out, exhausted, at the caravan's head.
It would at daybreak find itself behind the throng.

تَ ضياءَ الآفاق شمساً وبدرا
What the lands lose, whenever you are absent,
Truly, the lands are lifeless when deprived

Of the suns and moons of giving shining in their spheres,

The clouds of bounty thunder, and pour down
then sheds dew from its palm and flashes smiles.

So when you stay, they greet the morning green,
Wherever you step, the land blooms green,
and when you depart, they greet the evening dust-gray.
Wherever you cast your glance, the horizon gleams clear.

A lover longs for nearness and union;
The lover wishes intimacy, desires reunion,
if union eludes him, then nearness even with estrangement.
Yet when denied, loves remoteness and estrangement.

Do not alarm us with absence again, for we
Do not make us desolate with separation,
are granted no patience to endure separation.
Since we cannot endure being sundered from you.

If your return gives us sweetness to drink today,
If being with you has made us drunk today with joy,
it is in return for the bitterness parting made us drink yesterday.
By the bitterness you made us taste yesterday,

Pardon and clemency our path and destination.
