O Abu al-Khayr, who bestows every good
O father of all good and benefit
and clothes his arrows in the feathers of sound judgment;
Clad in the feathers of propriety

To whom people confide their troubles
the keys of writing and accounting;
The keys of writing and arithmetic

Whose eloquent speech, if he desires
does not lack decisive speech.
Will not lack the fruits of discourse

Virtues through which beneficence is ascribed to him,
Attributes of benevolence are ascribed to him
as rain is ascribed to the clouds.
As rainfall is attributed to clouds

He showed us every marvel, until
He showed us every fascinated one
he showed us, in his possession, the color of youth:
That we were in his eyes youth itself

ink—if a place contains it,
An inkwell, if it contained a place
I would take its resting place for a raven's nest.
I’d think it his den and the raven’s

So I do not know whether from liquefied kohl
I know not whether kohl or molten night
it took shape, or from the darkness of molten night.
Assumed a corporeal form

The gray-streaked locks say, when
The old hag with shrunken gums said
they see it: 'Would that this were some of my dye!'
When she saw him: “Would that this were my dye!”

And departure has drawn near; there is no staying,
And departure time has drawn near
only strapping the saddles onto the riding-camels,
With no delay but packing gear

to a king situated between dry land
To a king whose land lies between
and a brimming sea of towering billows.
A foaming, towering ocean and the barren terrain

So I shall find no companion there
I cannot find a companion there
but fish paired with desert lizards.
Save whales coupled with the mist

So supply me with a measure of ink
So provide me with some food
to sustain me until my return.
To strengthen me until my dying day
فإنfor if أسعفتَyou assist بالأقلامwith pens مَنًّاas a favor
فماthen not يغنىsuffices الطعامُfood عنin place of الشرابِdrink
For if you grant me pens as a favor,
For if you favor me with provender
then food is no substitute for drink.
Food will not suffice without drink
