    If this ignorance has spread among humankind,

    Then the learned man among them is an ignoramus.

    If he utters words whose worth they do not grasp,

    Nor the value of their meaning, then he has said nothing.

    And if his tongue seeks refuge in silence,

    Then in silence the deficient and the accomplished are equal.

    وأصعبُ شيء عالمٌ متجاهلُ

    So he has no refuge but feigning ignorance;

    And hardest of all is a learned man feigning ignorance.

    And we had heard, in times past, of Baqil,

    And this is an age whose every inhabitant is a Baqil.
