أياO وَلدson الحُصَينal-Ḥuṣayn وماand what is حُصَينٌḤuṣayn
لماذاwhy ضلَّmay ... fail سعيُكyour striving هِجتَyou stirred up حَربىmy war
O son of al-Ḥuṣayn—and what is Ḥuṣayn?
Why—may your striving fail—have you roused me to war?
أطلتُI prolonged تفكُّرىَmy reflection فرأيتُthen I saw علمىmy knowledge
وجهلُكand your ignorance ضدُّهits opposite فعرفتُthen I recognized ذنبىmy fault
I pondered long and saw that my knowledge
And your ignorance were opposites; then I knew my fault.
وماand not أهجوكI satirize you أنكbecause you are أهلُworthy of هجوٍsatire
ولكنّىbut I أجرِّبُtest فيكَon you ضربيmy blows
I do not satirize you because you deserve satire,
But I am testing my blows on you.
وهلand is there عيبٌany disgrace علىupon شَفَراتِthe edges سيفيmy sword
إذاif استمحنتُهاI put them to the test فيin لحمِthe flesh of كلبٍa dog
And is there any disgrace to my sword’s edges
If I test them on a dog’s flesh?
