أما ترى شجرات الورد مظهرة
Don't you see the rose trees displaying
لجلسة مع أديب في مذاكرة
A session with a man of letters, conversing,
بلاء ليس يشبهه بلاء
A trial unlike any trial
كنت مشتاقا وما يحجزني
Longing for you, nothing holds me back
ومن ذا الذي ترضى سجاياه كلها
And who is there whose qualities all please us?
ونحن أناس أهل سمع وطاعة
We are people of hearing and obedience
أآخر شيء أنت في كل هجعة
You're the last thing in my every slumber
الحمد لله المعيد المبدي
Praise be to Allah, the Restorer, the Manifester
خفي الله فيمن قد تبلت فؤاده
God has hidden in the one whose heart has withered
كم لطمة في حر وجهك صلبة
How many slaps on your stubborn face
قد فاز ذو الدنيا وذو الدين
The worldly and the devout have won
متى عطلت رباك من الخيام
When shall my soul find rest from camps and tents
اغتنم جدة الزمان الجديد
Seize the freshness of this new time,
عجلت وما كل العواذل يعجل
You hastened, though not all the fair ones hasten,
وقائل أيهما أنور
A questioner asked, which of the two shines brighter
صبرا أبا أيوب حل معظم
Have patience, O father of Ayub
كنت في مجلس فقال مغني
I was in an assembly when the bard
إذا رزق الفتى وجها وقاحا
When the youth is endowed with impudence
أحسن من تسعين بيتا سدى
Better than ninety verses vainly strung
كأنه وولاة العهد تتبعه
As though he, and the heirs to power, follow after
جزعت للشيب لما حل أوله
I grieved when first the grey appeared in my hair
أبا جعفر عرج على خلطائكا
O Abu Ja'far, visit your friends
قلب يمل على لسان ناطق
A heart weighs heavy on a speaking tongue
فأل سرى بسبيله المتوكل
The confident cypress went on its way
أي ركن وهى من الإسلام
What pillar weakened from Islam?
زائر يهدي إلينا
A visitor gifts us
لعمرك ما كل التعطل ضائر
By Your life not all leisure is harmful
أمسك فديتك عن عتاب محمد
Hold back your reproach from Muhammad
ما أراني أنال وعدك إلا
I do not see your promises fulfilled
إذا اجتمع الآفات فالبخل شرها
When misfortunes gather, stinginess is the worst of them
أسأت إذ أحسنت ظني بكم
I was wrong when I thought good of you,
هل لك يا هند في الذي زعموا
Do you have any roses now, Hindi
ما أحسن العفو من القادر
How excellent is pardon from the mighty one
يا بدر كيف صنعت بالبدر
O full moon, how you have outshone the full moon
أرى الدهر يخلقني كلما
I see time recreate me every time
أنفس حرة ونحن عبيد
Free souls while we are slaves
لم يضحك الورد إلا حين أعجبه
The rose did not smile, except when
قل للخليفة جعفر يا ذا الندى
Say to Caliph Ja'far, O you of dew
بني متيم هل تدرون ما الخبر
O clan of Mutayyam, do you know the news,
إن خس حظي من مال تخونه
My fortune's meager share of wealth betrayed me
وعائب للسمر من جهله
Chiding the brown for its ignorance,
يشتاق كل غريب عند غربته
Every stranger longs in his estrangement
عجبت كل العجب
I am filled with wonder
لك وجه كآخر الصك فيه
You have a face like the seal at the end of a document
أزيد في الليل ليل
Does the night add more night?
إني حممت ولم أشعر بحماكا
I was consumed with passion though I did not feel your fever
وليلة كأنها نهار
A night that was like daytime
نفحات الراح والتفاح
The breeze's breaths and the rose's scent
العسليات التي فرقت
The sweet nothings that set apart
الحمد لله شكرا
Praise be to God, thanks
أبو صالح من أتى بابه
Whoever comes to Abū Sālih's door
أرضيهم قولا ولا يرضونني
I please them with words, yet they are not pleased with me,
غصن من الآبنوس أبدى
A cypress branch's everlasting
أبلغ نجاحا فتى الفتيان مألكة
Tell the youth of success fulfilled
الدمع يمحو ويدي تكتب
My tears erase as my hand writes,
ومشترك الفؤاد له أنين
The companion of my heart has a moan
إلى الله فيما نابنا نرفع الشكوى
To God for what has befallen us we raise complaint
ذريني أمت والشمل لم يتشعب
Let me die while the family is still together, not yet split apart
علة البدر راقبي الله فيه
O moon's flaw, fear God in it
طلب المعاش مفرق
The struggle for livelihood parts
غاضت بدائع فطنة الأوهام
The ingenious masterpieces of imagination have faded away,
هذا العقيق فعد أي
This carnelian, so count, O hand of Isa,
يا ذا الذي بعذابي ظل مفتخرا
O you who boast of my torment
أميل مع الذمام على ابن أمي
I lean with the bush towards my mother's son,
ما ضره لو وفي بما وعدا
It would not harm him if he kept his promise
طلعت فقال الناظرون إلى
She rose, and the onlookers said in awe of her beauty:
لو كان عجبك مثل لبك لم يكن
If your admiration were like your mind, there would be
للدهر إدبار وإقبال
Time has its ups and downs,
ما أخطأ الورد منك لونا
The rose did no wrong in its hue
العين بعدك لم تنظر إلى حسن
After you my eyes see no beauty
وليلة كحلت بالنقس مقلتها
And a night darkened with grief's kohl
لاذ بها يشتكي إليها
He sought refuge with her, complaining to her,
لو تنصلت إلينا
If you had come to us
خليلي ما للحب يزداد جدة
My beloved, why does love grow stronger
بديهته مثل تفكيره
His spontaneity is like his thought
بديهته وفكرته سواء
His wit and wisdom are equal
من سبق السلوة بالصبر
Whoever precedes harm with patience
صبرت ومثلي صبره ليس ينكر
I was patient, and patience like mine cannot be denied,
لا يرعك المشيب يا ابنة عبد الله
Let not the hoariness of age disturb thee, O daughter of the noble,
لو كان للشكر شخص يبين
If gratitude had a visible form
لا تأمنن على سري وسركم
Trust not my secret to another’s ear,
جمعت أمرين ضاع الحزم بينهما
You combined two matters, losing composure between them
حجوا مواليك يا برهان واعتمروا
Your loved ones have come to worship you, O Light
عبدك الفتح كابد الليل حتى
Your slave endured the night until
لعمرك ما الناس أثنوا عليك
By your life! People have not praised you,
يسر من عاش ماله فإذا
He is glad, who lived enjoying his wealth, but when
للبس ثوبين باليين
Wearing two garments with the hands
أما الرغيف لدى الخوان
The loaf of bread with the monks
ما شئت من رجل نبيل
Whatever noble man you wish for
إن كان لي ذنب فلي حرمة
If I have sinned, I still have dignity
عجنا المطي ونحن تحت الحاجر
We rode while the rain poured down
لا يمنعنك خفض العيش تطلبه
Let not the hard life keep you from pursuing it
ولي حبيب أبدا مولع
I have a lover forever enthralled
توكلنا على رب السماء
We have entrusted ourselves to the Lord of the heavens,
يا أحمد بن أبي دؤاد دعوة
O Ahmad ibn Abi Du'ad, I sent
وثقت بالملك الواثق
They put their trust in an earthly king
سل الدمع عن عيني وعن جسدي المضنى
Ask the tears about my eyes, and my weary body,
فهمته جيش وعزمته سرى
His understanding an army, his determination a cavalry
ما الجود عن كثرة الأموال والنشب
Neither generosity from ample wealth and influence,
أقفر إلا من نبات منزله
His dwelling place is bare save for some plants
أنشأتها بركة مباركة
He created it as a blessed blessing
بسر من را إمام عدل
With joy for one whose leader is just,
اعلمي يا أحب شيء إليا
Know, O most beloved thing to me,
فوق طرف كالطرف في سرعة الشدد
With a wit like a sharp wit in haste
يا أبا أحمد لا ينجي
O Abu Ahmad, poetry does not flee
كلما غنى بنان
Whenever Banan sang,
أطاهر إني عن خراسان راحل
O Tahir, I am leaving Khorasan
نميل على جوانبه كأنا
We lean on its sides as if
أقلي فإن اللوم أشكل واضحه
Reprove me less, for blame
يا نورة الهجر جلوت الصفا
O light of estrangement, purity of affection,
لما بدا أيقنت بالعطب
When dawn appeared, I was certain of the ruin,
أعظم ذنبي عندكم ودي
My greatest sin in your view is my love,
لا ياس على الدنيا أناس
No despair, O people of this world,
سمير إذا جالسته كان مسليا
When you sit with Samir, he comforts
الورد يضحك والأوتار تصطخب
The roses laugh and the strings tremble
أعاذل ليس البخل مني سجية
I do not withhold out of miserliness,
إذا جدد الله لي نعمة
When God renews a blessing for me
لم ينصبوا بالشاذياخ ضبيحة
They did not erect with the vile ones the structure of vilification
لم يبق منك سوى خيالك لامعا
Nothing remains of you but your shining phantom
طال بالهم ليلك الموصول
Your long, unbroken night of anxiety
كم قد تجهمني السرى وأزالني
How the night journeys have wearied me, and displaced me,
قالت حبست فقلت ليس بضائر
She said, "You are imprisoned," and I said, "It's no misfortune -
مرت فقلت لها مقالة مغرم
She passed by, so I spoke to her my words of passion:
يا أمتا أفديك من أم
O my motherland, I ransom you with my mother
إن كنت جاهلة بقومي فاسألي
If you are ignorant of my people then ask
وإذا جزى الله امرأ بفعاله
And when Allah rewards a man for his deeds
وارحمتا للغريب في البلد
And mercy to the stranger in the country who is displaced
بان بقرب الخليفة التحف
The treasures appeared near the caliphate
حروف إذا لاءمت بالعين بينها
طلعت وهي في ثياب حداد
أنت كالكلب في حفاظك للود
من وراء الشباب شيب حثيت
طلبت هدية لك باحتيالي
لم تذقني حلاوة الإنصاف
أرض مربعة حمراء من أدم
قالوا عشقت صغيرة فأجبتهم
إنما ذنبي إليهن المشيب
إن تعف عن عبدك المسيء ففي
عيون المها بين الرصافة والجسر
أأرقد الليل مسرورا عدمت إذا
وسارية ترتاد أرضا تجودها
ليلي علي بهم طويل سرمد
ورقعة جاءتك مثنية
انظر فعن يمناك ويحك عالم
قلت لها حين أكثرت عذلي
أبلغ أخانا تولى الله صحبته
بأنفسنا لا بالطوارف والتلد
الله أكبر والنبي محمد
عشية حياني بورد كأنه
أي فتى لحظك ليس يمرضه
فما مات من كنت ابنه لا ولا الذي
ولكن الجواد أبا هشام
ولما أبت عيناي أن تكتما البكا
ما كنت أحسب أن الخبز فاكهة
جاوزت نهربين والنهروانا
دعه يداري فنعم ما صنعا
جسم كعود أراك
ولما رمى بالأربعين وراءه
الشيب ينهاه ويزجره
بالله يا ذات الجمال الفائق
قالوا أتاك الأمل الأكبر
ما زلت أسمع أن الملوك
خير من أسندت إليه الأمور
نزلنا بباب الكرخ أفضل منزل
عفا الله عنك ألا حرمة
يحزنني أن لا أرى من أحبه
تنكر حال علتي الطبيب
لعائن الله متابعات
وطئنا رياض الزعفران وأمسكت
أما ترى اليوم ما أحلى شمائله
أوصيك خيرا به فإن له
رأيت الهلال على وجهه
نطق البكا بهوى هو الحق
أترى الزمان يسرنا بتلاق
هي النفس ما حملتها تتحمل
أهلا وسهلا بك من رسول
حسرت عني القناع ظلوم
ماذا تقولين فيمن شفه سهر
أتم الله نعمته عليه
هيهات فات مرزأ وتخلفت
الصعو يصفر آمنا ومن اجله
