لم يضحك الورد إلا حين أعجبه

1. The rose did not smile, except when
It admired the beauty of plants and the chirping of birds.

١. لَم يَضحَكِ الوَردُ إِلّا حينَ أَعجَبَهُ
حُسنُ النَباتِ وَصَوتُ الطائِرِ الغَرِدِ

2. It emerged and showed us the beauties of the world,
And the winds blew in their new clothes.

٢. بَدا فَأَبدَت لَنا الدُنيا مَحاسِنَها
وَراحَتِ الراحُ في أَثوابِها الجُدُدِ

3. The basil shoots did not see their blossoming,
Except to realize the jealousy toward them.

٣. ما عايَنَت قُضُبُ الرَيحانِ طَلعَتَهُ
إِلّا تَبَيَّنَ فيها ذِلَّةُ الحَسَدِ

4. Its bed is between two boon companions,
And it sways between joined hands.

٤. بَينَ النَديمَينِ وَالخِلَّينِ مَضجَعُهُ
وَسَيرُهُ مِن يَدٍ مَوصولَةٍ بِيَدِ

5. A scented wind stood up for its right
To soothe hearts from anguish and contractedness.

٥. قامَت بِحُجَّتِهِ ريحٌ مُعَطَّرَةٌ
تَجلو القُلوبَ مِنَ الأَوصابِ وَالكَمَدِ

6. The hand of a lover rushed to support it
Against breasts, intestines, and liver.

٦. فَبادَرَتهُ يَدُ المُشتاقِ تَسنُدُهُ
إِلى التَرائِبِ وَالأَحشاءِ وَالكَبِدِ

7. As if it contains a cure for its coquetry,
Or something to prevent its eyes from drowsiness.

٧. كَأَنَّ فيهِ شِفاءً مِن صَبابَتِهِ
أَو مانِعاً جَفنَ عَينَيهِ مِنَ السَهَدِ

8. God does not torment anyone except
One who torments Him with a cold ear or a gloomy companion.

٨. لا عَذَّبَ اللَهُ إِلّا مَن يُعَذِّبُهُ
بِمُسمِعٍ بارِدٍ أَو صاحِبٍ نَكِدِ
