أتاني كتاب من خليل منمق
A letter came to me from my beloved friend
هو الغيث الذي يهمى
He is the shower that pours abundantly
تدنو مني الدنيا لمن
Roses draw near, a joyful sight
من عجب الدنيا امرؤ
How strange is one who sees
العيد أقبل والهناء بشير
The feast has come and glad tidings are near
إلى الله اشكو ما تكن ترائبي
I complain to God of what my worry has become
ما كنت أول عاشق بين الورى
I was not the first lover among mankind
إن يزرني يوما فتى ذو صلاح
A virtuous youth came by one day
اذا ما رمت من دنياك امرا
If troubles from your life at you are hurled
لو ابقت الدنيا على من سلف
If the world remained for those now gone
كل ما ترى الدنيا
All that you see of this world
إنما الدنيا نعيم وشقاء
The world is but joy and sorrow
ويلي على هذي الجوائب
Alas for these compositions
سالت دنياي متى ينتهي
I asked my world when will your actions end
ألا قف بالطلول ولو قليلا
Oh stop, even briefly, at the sand dunes
لو انصفت دنياي في حكمها
Roses are red, violets are blue
سألت ذا صمم عن حاله شفقا
I asked the deaf man about his state out of compassion
إنما دنياي وعد
My world is but a promise
خلفوا لي كآبة وهموما
They left me with sorrow and worries,
عبر الدنيا علينا
Transient in this world
كأنما دنياي أحبولة
My world seems a lure,
محضت دنياي نصحا
My world exhorted me,
من الدنيا جرت عبر
Roses are red, violets are blue, I cannot translate, this poem for you.
إذا كان خير الدين عني راضيا
If my religion is pleased with me
أرى زماني وفي سيماه تبشير
I see my time and in its features good tidings
كأن الشمس تبرد ان بردنا
As if the sun grew cold when we turned cold,
أرى القول يحلو بذكر الرجال
I see that speech is made sweet by mention of men,
إن تبتسم دنياك يوما فلا
If your world smiles at you one day, do not
تبسم ثغر الكون عن طالع السعد
The universe smiles at the rising of good fortune
ألا ثق بتيسير الامور فما يرى
Do not trust that matters will be easy, for what seems
إن ترض زيدا أغضبت عمرا
If you please Zaid, you anger Omar
يا من يسائل كيف كانت حالنا
O you who ask how we were
هذا كتابي للظريف ظريفاً
This is my book for the witty and refined
ما ترى عيني مثيلك
Roses are red, violets are blue
تود زوجي شططا أنني
My husband wishes I were
المرء والمرأة سيان في الـ
A man and a woman are alike in
ورب حزن القلب عن سفه
By my Lord, grief guards the heart from folly
ليس العفاف من النساء سجية
Chastity in women is not innate virtue
تغار زوجي علي حتى
My husband is so jealous of me
وما نفع الوثير من الحشايا
Of no avail are many garments
إذا بت مشغول الفؤاد بما ترى
When my heart is busy with what it sees
قم عجلا قم سؤلي عندك
Rouse thee, rouse thee, friend, and when thou art free
الدمع بعدك ما ذكرتك جارِ
Tears after you, when I remembered you, flowed
ملك الجمال أعز من ملك له
The angel of beauty is dearer than a king who owns
الحق يعلو والصلاح يعمر
Truth prevails and righteousness prospers
كيف ترجو من خسيس القدر ان
How can you expect one with a lowly fate
ما انصفت دنياي في انها
My unjust world did not spare
أرى غاية اللذات قبل ابتدائها
I see the height of pleasures before they start
ان ابغ من دنياي يوما حاجة
If I want for my life one day something
الفى من الدنيا العناء ومزبر
I found the sky full of sorrows and griefs
لمن أشكو وقلبي اليوم
To whom can I complain, when my heart is
تصبح الدنيا لزيد مرة
The world belongs to Zaid one day
إن النساء حيثما كن سوى
Wherever women are, except
كاس النوى ملئت الى اصبارها
The cup of life filled to the brim with bitterness
الناس في الدنيا على
People in life are of one mind
لم ادر هل دنيا في
I did not know if it was the world
إن زارني عالم أو جاهل بدرت
If a scholar or ignorant man visits me
أرى في طلعة الجاه
In the arrogance of the ignorant
ليت شعري ماذا يفيد البيان
Oh how I wish I knew what good is rhetoric
من يلح من الدنيا
Whoever insists on this life
كأن همومي وهي تحت مخدتي
My worries, as if they were under my pillow,
شكوت من الدنيا فقالت ظلمتني
I complained to the world and she said, you have wronged me
يا فاتر الجفون ما بدا لك
O you who closes his eyelids, what made you
لسنا نرى إلا جمالك في الضحى
We see none but your beauty in the morning glow
إذا كان التغزل شان شعري
If eulogizing is a poetic affair,
سروا والوجد في الاحشا باق
They traveled, while passion remains in the innermost depths.
تدور بي الدنيا وحالي واقف
The world revolves around me while I stand still
أتيتني مستفتياً في أمر
You came to me seeking advice, on something
إذا أمر الهوى رابك
If passion's path confounds your mind,
زارت سعاد وثوب الليل مسدول
Saad visited while the night's robe was trailing,
رأيت دنياي تبكي
I saw my world crying
أتاني كتاب تنقيه الكتائب
A book came to me, clearing worries
يا عين بكى فوادا
O eye, weep a heart
سألت دنياي يوما
I asked my world one day
ما طابت الدنيا سوى
Nothing in life is sweet
كابدت من زمني كوارث جمة
I have endured immense disasters in my time
أرى للنساء الماشيات حلاوة
I see grace in women as they walk,
لبعد احبتي عيل اصطباري
My patience is tested by the absence of my loved ones
رعى الله التجارب حيث ابدت
May God shepherd my trials as they unfold
لقد راقني في الليل دمع الغمائم
The tears of the clouds pleased me in the night
يا سيدي اني وحقك لم ازل
O my master, by your right I have not ceased
يا للعجاب وكل عجب
Oh, what wonders and marvels!
كأنما جرذان بيتي درت
As if the rats of my home gnawed
ما رأيت في الدنيا
I have not seen in this world
تعاكس المستقيم الد
The stubborn flow against the stream
قد كان طبع أبي دلامة إنه
My father's nature was to satirize, for
قد أقبلت أم دفر
Have you come closer or left
أرى الدهر خوانا يعادي الجوائبا
I see time as an enemy that harms the resolute
أقول وفي فوادي النار تذكو
I say while in my heart there is a burning fire,
إن الجوائب والدنيا قد اعتدتا
The rewards and life have transgressed
لم يخل في الدنيا امرؤ
No man in this world is free
كأنما دنياي من زئبق
My world is like mercury,
لا ينال المجد من رهبا
Glory is not gained by the timid
قد زادت الدنيا علي عداوة
The world has shown more enmity toward me
لا يطيب في الدنيا
Life is not pleasant
من سره عاجل الدنيا فسوف يرى
Whoever is impatient for this world
اسفه من دنياه تزرى به
He apologizes for his world that has sunk low
ان يلهث الوغد الدنئ
If the scoundrel dares
إن دنياي عجوز
My world is an old woman
جلا عني سلامك يا خليلي
Your peace has departed from me, O my friend
لئن غابت فما غابت
If she is absent, she is not absent,
ومن محن الدنيا عداوة جاهل
Among the tribulations of this life is the enmity of an ignorant man,
كل ما على الدنيا
All that is in this world
إذا ذكر المجدون يوما لفضلهم
If the virtuous are mentioned one day for their merit,
قطعت النظم عني يا خليلي
You have cut off verse from me, my friend
يا معشر العلماء افتوا سائلا
O scholars, answer a questioner
يا سائلي باسم الذي أنا مادح
O you who ask in the name of Him whom I praise
ويا رب حتى في المنام تروعني
Oh Lord, even in dreams You startle me
يا أيها الأعزاب أني رافض
O bachelors, I reject
إن قال غيري قد يقال زوجة
If others say "a wife",
تبغي لكاعي سد سميها معا
You want cups to seal, call it union
أرى الدهر صافاني ومال إلى الصلح
I see time being kind to me and leaning towards reconciliation
وفي باريس لذات كما في
In Paris there is pleasure, as in
لله درب الحديد كم كفل
How many burdens has iron door borne,
أو ما كفاني اليوم طول تناء
How long my longing for those I love is not quenched
يا ليت اني والجوائب كاسمنا
If only I and the spring were one in name
يعاوص دنياه من لا يرى
He who sees not his life's thorns
ما صاحب الدنيا سوى
None shall find companions in this world
مهما تخالفت الارواح هب على
However spirits may differ, let
إذا ما تعشى القنبيط جراضم
When the hedgehog finishes his supper,
أمودعي والدمع كاد يحول
I bid you farewell as tears almost overwhelm
أقول وفي فوادي السر ينمو
I say, while the secret grows in my heart,
عنا لي من زماني ما اريج
Long have I lived without fragrance or scent,
يا ليلة لم تذق عيني بها سنة
O night my eyes have not known sleep
عبث الهوى بي من نفور الآنس
The folly of passion has made me suffer from the withdrawal of companions,
أين المبارز والمناضل
Where are the warriors and fighters
مضى وكل قطين بعده فان
He passed away, and all clusters of stars will perish after him
لاع الغرام فؤادا لازم الشجنا
Passion seizes the heart, pain accompanies sorrow,
بروحي من أعلمه وقلبي
With my soul, I taught him, and my heart
غرام دنياك سكر
The love of your world is sweet
الحرص في الدنيا يزيد
Greed in this world increases
من حارب العين خانته مضاربه
He who battles the eye, its blows betray him,
طيري لا غير لا أسلو عنه ساعة
My bird flies without rest, I do not ask it to stop for a moment
بسم الزمان عن المنى وتنورا
In the name of time, away from desire, seeking enlightenment,
إذا صور الدنيا المصور ظاهرا
If the artist depicts the world apparently,
رأيت بني الدنيا يؤاكل بعضهم
I saw the people of the world devouring one another,
ساعة البعد عنك شهر وعام
The hour of separation from you is a month and a year
يا أيها البحر قد أهديتني دررا
O sea, you have gifted me pearls,
ليس في الدنيا سوى محن
There is naught in life but tribulation
جفتني الوقائع في الصوم إذ
The phases left me confused in fasting, when
عجبت لدنياي كم اطمعت
I'm amazed at my world, how much it hoped,
متى بسمت دنياك خادنك العدى
When your world smiles at you, gratifying the enemy,
من رأى من الدنيا
Whoever saw half
تبرج لي الدنيا على حين لا ارى
The world allured me when I could not see
رحلوا كما رحل الكرى عن ماقي
They departed as the fates departed from what remained
زعموا الدنيا عناسا ينجلي
They claimed the world is an idler that becomes clear
حتام أرتقب الوصال تعللا
I eagerly wait for our reunion, though that is not to be,
ماذا اقول اذا اردت مديح من
What can I say if I wanted praise from
كان دنياي ثكلى
My world was bereft
طوبى لمن في الناس أصبح حالقاً
Blessed is he who among people became a barber,
إن أطرب الأسماع مدح مهذب
The most pleasing sounds are refined praise poems,
لا تنقضي الشكوى من
The complaints about life never end,
حرام على من غاب عن مصر انه
It is forbidden for one who is absent from Egypt to
كلما هب نسيم في الضحى
Whenever a breeze blows at dawn
ورب عجوز تحاكي السعالي
Many an old woman acts coy and coughs,
يا بدر قل لي هذا الهجران
O full moon, tell me, is this estrangement
كأن الناس يرتاحون طبعا
As if people are comfortable, of course,
أيها القارئون صبرا على ما
O readers, have patience with what
لا الوم الدنيا على خطأ الفهم
كل بني الدنيا على
تعجبت من دنياي لما رأيتها
في طلعة الدنيا بها
وجدت بني الدنيا جهولا وعالما
كأن دنياي عقد
وطنت نفسي على ما
قفا بي خليل ابك الطلولا
في مخبر الدنيا الذي
فديتك من ظبي وان لم ترد قربي
شهدت عليك مناقشات جئتها
إليك الفصل في كل الأمور
رويدك إنني ما جئت نكرا
على الدنيا انجلى ذنب لنجم
إن تعدل الدنيا فكن
يذوب فؤادي لإذكار الحبائب
ما الذي ترجو من الدنيا وقد
ألا يا قلب مالك لا تذوب
وسيلة كل المكرمات محمد
انما الدنيا عناء
تولى ربيع العمر مني واقبلت
زعموا الدنيا مدورة
متى هب النسيم على الغياض
أرى كل شيء في الشتاء إذا بدا
أقول لدنياي إني أرى
من لم تودبه دنياه بعبرتها
قد طينت الدنيا على
إذا ضغطت دنياي في البرد جثتى
إنما الدنيا غرور
تتودد الدنيا لمن
أهلا بأكرم قادم
إن تعدل الدنيا فكن
وهم الذين كسوا قوام جوائبي
يا سامي الأوصاف إن لديك من
إليك شكوت من ألم الفراق
طرف التصور في غرامك جامح
ألا عللاني بالتمدن تعليلا
أما أنا فاود لو أن الورى
أثام عليك الدهر انك جاهل
الشعر مثل الشَّعر داعية الهوى
راح الحمار وخلى القيد في الوتد
قد كنت أحسب هيئة الدنيا
لها علي في الهوى
أقر أعيننا بالعين أكرم من
بنو الدنيا تعوقهم الاماني
بحرى المقدر حيث قدر شائيا
اذا فكرت في دنياي يوما
