1. Long have I lived without fragrance or scent,
yet your friendship has made me joyful and content.

2. My reputation is far and wide, though I am unknown,
I have not achieved glory through effort or study.

3. You know my state, so comfort me in my sorrow,
heal my wounds as a loving friend would.

4. As long as I live, I will thank the hand that blessed me,
and praise it so that poetry comes alive.

and their forefathers from long ago.

6. If a friend is generous by nature,
be loyal though he is close or far.
