1. It is forbidden for one who is absent from Egypt to
See goodness in other than it, though faults are in it.

2. To compare its defects and loss
To becoming absent from it while still desiring it.

3. So stay away, O absent yet desiring one!
And lose, O absent, disappointed one!

4. For Egypt is nothing but a paradise, and its meadows
Are what every soul seeking desires.

5. Its abundant Nile, blessed, overflowing
With abundant goodness the clouds did not pour down.

6. So I for it, despite its faults, treasure its virtues,
Above all others sprawling in the wilderness.
