ضحك الدهر بعد طول عبوس
Time laughed after long frowning
من بالخلافة أولى
I am more deserving of the caliphate
حي أجساد جبل بدنات
Long live their bodies, hillsides of flesh
إذا أزموا ألقوا فضول حبائهم
When hardships come, they cast off their excess loves
وإذا دعوت أخا يزينك
When you call a dear brother of yours
ولكن الجواد أبا هشام
But the generous Abū Hishām
إذا أنت لم تملل أخاك بقلبه
If you do not tire of your brother in his affliction
أتيتك شتى الرأي لابس حيرة
I wandered to you perplexed in thought
أخ كنت آوي منه عند ادكاره
A brother whom I used to take refuge in when I recalled him
أبا جعفر هلا اصطنعت مودتي
O Abu Ja'far, why don't you make me your friend
يا أخا العرف إذا عن
O brother of knowledge, when it turns away
إذا الحرب جالت بهم جولة
Softly the west wind sighs
وإني في دعائك عن خطوب
And I in calling you from misfortunes
قالت بعدت فخنت في الحب
She said you were distant and unfaithful in love
خير ما سائس وخير مسوس
The best of all leaders, the best to preside,
ما واحد من واحد
No one from one
أصبحت من رأي أبي جعفر
I have become, in my father Ja'far's view
دعوت لإحدى النائبات محمدا
I called upon Muhammad for one of the ladies
وقائل لي أبدا
And one who says to me forever
قدرت فلم تضرر عدوا بقدرة
You were able, yet you did not harm an enemy with your ability,
لئن كنت ملهى للعيون وقرة
If you were delight for eyes and joy
لما أتاني خبر الزيات
When news of Zayyat's death came to me,
ولرب نازلة يضيق بها الفتى
And for my Lord relief comes, when straits oppress a man
دنت بأناس عن تناء زيارة
A visit has drawn near with intimates after estrangement
إحدى الملمات الجلائل
One of the great disasters
ملامك عني جل خطب فأوجعا
My angel, cease reproaching me, for grief has left me sick
كل لساني عن وصف ما أجد
My tongue fails to describe what I feel
كيف أصبحت صفي النفس
How you have become the most pure of soul
أبتداء بالتجني
I begin by avoiding harm
إن الزمان وما ترى بمفارقي
Indeed time and what you see with my departure
وأجني على قومي وأحمل عنهم
I bear others' burdens though faultless
إذا السنة الشهباء مدت سماءها
When the starry sky stretched out its horizon
كان الشباب كخضاب قد نصل
Youth was like dyed hair well-combed
أساءوا وفيهم محسنون فإن تهب
They have done wrong, though some among them are good.
دعوتك في بلوى ألمت صروفها
I called you in afflictions whose turns pained me
تخذتكم درعا وترسا لتدفعوا
The enemy's arrows you did ward from me
وأفضل ما يأتيه ذو الدين والحجى
The best that can come to a man of faith and wisdom
ليلة كاد يلتقي طرفاها
The night when its edges nearly met
غشيتني من الهموم غواش
The sorrows have overwhelmed me, clouding my mind
كم ترى يبقى على ذا بدني
How much life remains for this body of mine
بارك الله للأمير أبي العباس
May God bless Amir Abu al-Abbas, the best of kings at Naurouz,
أصبح الملك عاليا بأبي العباس
The kingdom grew high with Abul-'Abbas
متيم متلف تلدده
A lover consumed, tormented by his yearning
تعز يا خير الورى عن أخ
The best of creations, be consoled for a brother
يا مذيقي غصة الكمد
O you who taste the bitterness of sorrow,
أنا من بين ذا الورى مظلوم
I am wronged amongst mankind, and should I dispute with them, I am the losing disputant.
هنيئا للوزير قضاء دين
Congratulations to the minister for fulfilling his duty
أيرضيك أن تضنى فدام لك الرضا
Does it please you to grieve while contentment is yours?
أسرك يا مناي ولا أسوك
I confide in you, O consolation, and do not complain to you,
نعم الورى بسوابغ النعماء
How excellent is the land with abundant blessings,
دعني أواصل من قطعت
Let me continue what was cut off
إيها أبا جعفر وللدهر كرات
Alas Abu Ja'far! And for time, goodness gracious!
فهبني مسيئا مثل ما قلت ظالما
Forgive me for my wrong as I was unjust
وما زلت مذ لدن اعطيته
Since I was granted him as a gift
أبا جعفر خف تبوة بعد صولة
O Abu Ja'far, restrain your exuberant stride
قالت لئن خفت من شيب ومن كبر
She said: "If you fear the coming of gray hair and old age,
تغير لي فيمن تغير حارث
Haarith has changed for one who changed
فصرت من سوء ما بليت به
The ill-treatment I received made me
وإذا جزى الله امرأ بإخائه
When Allah rewards a man for his brotherhood
من أتاني في حاجة فله الفضل
He who comes to me with a need
أشرق المشرق بالمعتز
The East shone brightly
سقيا ورعيا لأيام مضت سلفا
I cry for days gone by, passed into history
أميل مع الذمام على ابن أمي
I lean with the south wind upon the son of my mother
أبدا معتذر لا يعذر
Never apologizing, no excuse is accepted
سأشكر عمرا إن تراخت منيتي
I will be grateful if my desire wanes from me
يا أميرا ما رأينا
O prince, we have not seen
ألا رب لؤم بين عز وثروة
Alas, my Lord, glory and wealth are a burning fire
وكنت أخي بإخاء الزمان
You were my brother in the brotherhood of time
رحنا إليك وقد راحت بك الراح
We went to you when comfort left with you
دع المن عن قوم أرقوك أنفسا
Leave off blaming a people who distressed you
أراك فلا أرد الطرف كيلا
I see you, so I do not turn away my gaze
إما تريني أمام القوم متبعا
Either you see me following the people
يا صديقي الذي بذلت له الود
O my friend for whom I offered affection
وكنا متى ما نلتمس بسيوفنا
And whenever we sought glory with our swords
أعيضت بعد حمل الشوك
After bearing the passion’s burden
ساعدنا الدهر فبتنا معا
Time helped us and we spent the night together
أزالت عزاء القلب بعد التجلد
The solace of my heart was swept away
وكنت أرجي أنه حين يلتحي
I hoped when we met
لا تلمني فإن همك أن تثري
Blame me not, for your concern is to hoard
فلو كان للشكر شخص يبين
If gratitude were a person to behold
ألا قل لخير الناس نفسا ووالدا
Tell the best of people in self and father,
يا صاحبي تأملا عذرى
O my friends, consider my excuse
اشرب الراح صحيحا
Drink pure wine
إنما المرء صورة
A man is but an image,
دموع دعاهن الهوى فأجبنه
Tears love summoned, so they responded
وناجيت نفسي بالفراق أروضها
I confided to myself about parting, trying to tame it,
لا يمنعنك خفض العيش في دعة
Let not the hardship of life in poverty
حسن حوى كل المحاسن واعتلى
Beauty embodied all virtues and ascended the peak
لفضل بن سهل يد
The hand of Fadl bin Sahl
إذا المرء أثرى ثم ضن برفده
When a man grows rich then miserly with his wealth
لا تعقدن عقدة إن كنت ناقضها
Don't make a knot if you'll untie it
أخ لي أبثثته كربة
A brother of mine, I burdened him with sorrows
وجني ورد فوق خد مشرق
A rose garden above a glowing cheek
هوى وغلت به الأحشاء منها
Passion surged and overflowed from within
أقبلن يكنفن مثل الشمس طالعة
They come like the rising sun
بدا حين أثرى بإخوانه
When he prospered with his brothers
لئن أدرك الزيات بالزيت رتبة
If the oils reached the rank
ألم ترها مرة إذ نأت
Did you not see her once when she came
من يشتري مني إخاء محمد
Who will buy from me the brotherhood of Muhammad?
وخل كنت عين الرشد منه
I used to be the eye of guidance from him
إذا ما انقضى مجلس للوزير
When the vizier's council is adjourned
إذا سقى الله مرجوا لنائبة
When Allah rains
ولرب خدن كان إن
For how many a bosom friend, if
وقلت لهم قرب كقربي طاهر
I said to them a kinship like mine is pure
وكنت أخي بالدهر حتى إذا نبا
You were my brother through time, until when you prophesied,
فعلت فأثنوا شاكرين لمنعم
You acted, and they thanked the Benefactor gratefully,
اختلجت عيني فأبصرته
My eyes fluttered, and I saw him
ومؤمل للنائبات إذا
And hopeful for good things when
لكل عدو جولة ثم مرجع
Every enemy has a round, then a return
أضحى هلال العهد قد
The crescent of the era has become
لا أهنيك بطوس
I do not congratulate Tows
الله أظهر دينه
God made His religion manifest
لئن صدرت لي زورة عن محمد
If I showed ingratitude to Muhammad
كفى بفعال امرئ عالم
A leader's deeds for his people suffice
مضت على عهده الليالي
The nights have passed since his days,
وليلة من الليالي الزهر
And on a night of many nights the full moon
مررت يوما حجرة القبور
I passed one day the chamber of the tombs
عيناك قد حكتا مبيتك
Your eyes have told of the night we spent
وما لبس الأقوام ثوبا من الهوى
And never have the people worn a garment of passion
لما وثقت وخنتني
When you betrayed me after I trusted you
قطع الموت كل حبل وثيق
Death severed every close bond
أولى البرية طرا أن تواسيه
The most virtuous of creation should console him,
ربما تكره النفوس من الأمر
Perhaps souls loathe what afflicts them
يجيلون عن ليل بهيم ظنونهم
They harbor suspicions about a dreadful night,
قلت لها حين أكثرت عذلي
I said to her, when she blamed me excessively
ولحيني قلت لا أرضى
And for a time I said I will not
ولكن عبد الله لما حوى الغنى
But Abdullah, when he amassed wealth
كنت السواد لمقلتي
You were the blackness of my eyelids
يا ظالما أدلى عليا
Oh you who wronged me though I trusted you,
ونبئت ليلى أرسلت بشفاعة
I told Layla had sent interceding
وخليل لي أرضاه
A friend of mine owns spacious land
لم أر نحسا مذ غداة أمس
Since yesterday morn I have seen no ill omen,
فإن تشبعي منا وتروي ضلالة
If you are satiated of us and quenched of error
ليهنك أصهار أذلت بعزها
May it gladden you to have humbled proud empires with your might,
ولم تدر يوم البين أني وأنها
You knew not on the day we parted, that I and she
وعابك أقوام وقالوا شبيهة
People dispraised you, saying you resemble
بقلبي عن هوى البيض انصراف
My heart is turned away from pining for the fair-skinned maidens,
يا أخا لم أر في الناس خلا
O friend whom I have not seen among people
هل كنت تهوين أن أرضى سواك وأن
Did you wish that I be content with none but you, and that
من كانت الآمال ذخرا له
He who hopes are a treasure to him,
إذا ذم من زمن يومه
When one who lived in days gone by condemns his time,
صف مراحا إن كنت تهوى مراحا
Describe the scent of meadows, if you desire meadows
ولما بدا جعفر في الخميس
When Ja'far appeared at the auspicious hour
ولما علتني كبرة وتوزعت
When old age overcame me and scattered
وإذا امرؤ كنفت به آباؤه
When a man is surrounded by his forefathers
يمضي الأمور على بدائهه
He goes about matters as they begin,
كان أخا ثم عاد لي أملا
He was once a brother, then he turned into hope for me
راحت به العيس عن أرض بها شجن
The doves departed from a land filled with yearning
بأبي قل لي لكي أعلم
By my father, tell me why
ولما رأيتك لا فاسقا
When I saw you were no libertine to be feared,
برزن فلا ذو اللب أقين لبه
They came forth, but he of understanding heart
وصاحب ماجد خلائقه
He is a man of high morals
وحاكم في القلوب
Ruling in hearts
ألان إذا قرت عيون وحققت
Alas, if eyes are delighted and
اسمعي مني أبثك شاني
Listen to me, I confide in you, my friend
أبا جعفر سمتني خطة
Oh Abu Ja'far, you have outlined a scheme for me
يا نائما أرقني
O sleeper, you kept me awake
وصلت رقعة الأمير الرئيس
The letter of the eminent Chief reached me
ما الذي أفعل أم ما أقول
What shall I do or what shall I say
تأمل سماء أظلت علي
Gaze upon a sky that has shaded me
تلا جري عباس يزيد وخالد
The horses of Abbas and Yazid and Khalid raced,
حب لأحمد قد فشا
Love for Ahmad has spread
علق نفيس من الدنيا فجعت به
My precious soul detached itself from this world, and I grieved for it,
هنتك أكرومة جللت نعمتها
Your grace is a beautiful necklace adorned with bounties
قلت إن الذنب لي والذنب
I said: "The sin is mine, though the deed
لا دار للمرء بعد الموت يسكنها
No home shelters man after death
وعلمتني كيف الهوى وجهلته
You taught me passion though you were ignorant of it
سيدي أنت إنني بك صب
My master, I pine for you
إني اغتربت أرجي أن أنال غنى
I migrated in hope of gaining wealth,
الله أيد بالخلافة جعفرا
God supported Ja'far with the caliphate
تمر الصبا صفحا بساكن ذي الغضا
The morning breeze blows gently over the abode of the beloved,
لن يدرك المجد أقوام وإن كرموا
Glory will not be attained by people, though generous
إذا طمع يوما غزاني منحته
ربما ارتجت الليالى
خذي خبري عن سائرين صحبتهم
يبعث منه الندى في المحول
تغير لي دهر وأنكر صاحب
نصيحة أيها الوزير
فإن تكن الدنيا أنالتك ثروة
بلوت الزمان وأهل الزمان
معودتي الغفران للذنب والرضى
لم أبك من صرف دهر
أيها الربع الذي قد دثرا
لاموا وقالوا اصطبر عنها فقلت لهم
إن لا أراك إذا ظلمت
يا با علي خير قولك ما
رد قولي وصدق الأقوالا
إذا ما الفكر ولد حسن لفظ
أبغضته من بعد ما بذل الرضا
قل للخليفة ترب العلم والأدب
عذلت امرءا في عشقه ليس يعذرك
أخ بيني وبين الدهر
أراك إذا أيسرت خيمت عندنا
أضحت عرى الإسلام وهي منوطة
تلج السنون بيوتهم وترى لهم
أسد ضار إذا مانعته
ظلوم محاجر الحدقه
يا أبا جعفر لكم من نعيم
أواقف أنت من صبر على ثقة
خل النفاق لأهله
إذا ذكر الناس أعداءهم
عفت مساو تبدت منك واضحة
كن كيف شئت وقل ما تشا
من تهيا له أخ كأخ لي
عهدي بعوف وهو من مازن
ومن كان يؤتى من عدو وحاسد
قولا لعبد الله ذاك الذي
مبتسم عن برد
ما لي بجائحة أرى
هب الزمان رماني
يا صديقي بالأمس صرت عدوا
فدعني راغما أشقى بوجدي
معجب عند نفسه
ولست كباك من تهامة منزلا
نعى الناعي إلي أبي
أعتقني سوء ما فعلت من الرق
قسيمان من قلبي قسيم لحبها
كم قد تجرعت من غيظ ومن حزن
وأنت هوى النفس من بينهم
أحسب النوم حكاكا
أبلغ أبا إسحق واحدة
لمن لا أرى أعرضت عن كل من أرى
لئن أصبحت طوع يديه
باتت تشوقني برجع حنينها
يا من حنيني إليه
بكى البين قبلي عاشقون ولا أرى
أناة فإن لم تغن أعقب بعدها
لنا إبل كوم يضيق بها الفضا
آذنتك الشعرات البيض
سل الليل من يجلو الدجى عن متونه
إن امرأ ضن بمعروفه
إذا ما بدوا والقوم فوق سروجهم
تزيده الأيام إن أقبلت
أثبت الرحمن بالسعد المضي
