1. A friend of mine owns spacious land
He is a friend to my brothers all

2. He sees not in generous gifts a debt
But ample thanks as recompense

3. Rather he sees each ample gift
For meager thanks a fair exchange

4. He battled night until at last
Seeing the night had lasted long

5. He tore the dawn with flashing blades
The veils around him slipped away

6. He killed it not till it surrendered
A vanquished corpse before him lay

7. In sorrow's morn they sheathed their swords
And stilled the winds of war's turmoil

8. From it they gleaned abiding joy
And it reaped from them sane minds
