- أبا عثمان هل لك في صنيعO Abu Uthman, would you do a kindness,
- أتانا بريدان من واسطTwo couriers came to us from Wasit,
- أتاني سنان بالوداع لمؤمنSinān came to me bearing word of Muʾmin’s farewell.
- أتوعد كل جبار عنيدDo you threaten every defiant tyrant?
- أحب الغناء وشرب الطلاءI love singing and drinking wine,
- أحول كالقرد أو كما يرقبCross-eyed like a monkey, or as a thief peers
- أدر الكأس يميناPass the cup to the right;
- إذا لم يكن خير مع الشر لم تجدIf there is no good alongside evil, you will not find
- إذا مت يا أم الحنيكل فانكحيWhen I die, O Umm al-Hunaykil, then marry;

- إقر مني على الوليد السلاماConvey my greetings of peace to al-Walid,

- ألا حبذا سفري وإن قيل إننيAh, how delightful my journey, even if it is said that I
- ألا ليت الإله يحين سلمىAh, would that God brought Salma to her end,

- قامت إلي بتقبيل تعانقنيShe rose toward me with kisses, embracing me,
- قد تمنى معشر إذ أطربواA company made wishes when they were stirred to delight,
- قد جعلنا طوافنا بالدنانWe have made our circumambulation around the wine jars,
- قد راح نحو العراق مشخلبهMashkhalabah has set off toward Iraq;
- قد كنت أحسب أنني جلد القوىI had thought myself tough and strong,
- قم فاسقني قبل أصوات العصافيرRise, and give me drink before the sparrows' calls.
- كأن الحميم على جسمهاAs though the hot water on her body,
- لا أسأل الله تغييرا لما صنعتI do not ask God for any change in what she has done.
- لا عيش إلا بمالك بن أبي السمحThere is no life but with Malik ibn Abi al-Samh;
- لقد أغدوا على أشقIndeed, I set out in the morning on a chestnut steed
- لقد قذفوا أبا وهب بأمرThey accused Abu Wahhab of a great thing
- لمن دمنة أقفرت بالجليلWhose campsite has grown desolate at al-Jalil?
- ليت حظي اليوم من كلWould that my share today from all
- ليت هشاما عاش حتى يرىIf only Hisham had lived long enough to see
- ما لسلمى تجنبتWhat is it with Salma? She has shunned
- من لقلب أمسى كئيبا حزيناWho will tend a heart grown dejected and sad,
- من مبلغ عني أبا كاملWho will tell Abu Kamil on my behalf
- منازل قد تحل بها سليمىDwellings where Sulayma may stay,
- نام من كان خليا من ألمWhoever was free of pain slept.
- نزلت سلمى بقلبيSalma settled in my heart,
- هل إلى أم سعيدIs there, to Umm Saʿīd,
- هلك الأحول المشومThe ill-omened, cross-eyed man has perished;
- وإن على شاطي الفرات لفتيةAnd indeed, on the bank of the Euphrates are young men
- وجدت العيش يا سلمىI found life's pleasure, O Salma,
- وزق وافر الجنبينAnd a wineskin, bulging on both sides,
- وصفت عندي سليمىSulayma was described to me,
- وصفراء في الكأس كالزعفرانAnd yellow wine in the cup, like saffron—
- ولقد صدنا غزالا سانحاAnd indeed we caught a gazelle crossing our path,
- ولقد قال طبيبي وطبيبيAnd indeed my physician said,
- ولقد قضيت وإن تجلل لمتيThough time may pass, as long as I live
- ولقد مررت بنسوة أعشيننيAnd indeed I passed by women who dazzled me,
- ومن يك مفتاحا لخير يريدهAnd if anyone is a key to some good he seeks,
- ويح سلمى لو ترانيPoor Salma—if she could see me,
- يا أهل بابل ما نفست عليكمO people of Babylon, I have not envied you
- يا أيها السائل عن ديننا نحنO you who ask about our creed,
- يا سلم كنت كجنة قد أطمعتO Salm, you were like a garden that had enticed,
- يا سليمى يا سليمىO Sulaimi, O Sulaimi
- يا من لقلب في الهوى متشعبAh, who will aid a heart torn apart by love?
- يا ويح جندي الألى خاروا وما نظرواAlas for my troops, who faltered and gave no thought
