مَكانَin the position of سُهَيلٍSuhayl (Canopus) مِنin relation to جَميعِall الكَواكِبِthe stars
مَكانَ سُهَيلٍ مِن جَميعِ الكَواكِبِ
Ah, would that I were to you, wherever you are,
Wherever you may be, oh how I wish that I were there with you
as Suhayl is to all the stars.
In the place of Suhail, among all the stars,
يَراهُنَّhe sees them أَصحاباًas companions وَهُنَّand they يَرَينَهُthey see him
يَراهُنَّ أَصحاباً وَهُنَّ يَرَينَهُ
وَيَسريand he journeys by night إِذاwhen يَسرينَthey journey by night غَيرَwithout مُصاحِبِa companion
وَيَسري إِذا يَسرينَ غَيرَ مُصاحِبِ
He sees them as companions, and they see him;
They see him as a companion, and he sees them in turn
and he journeys by night when they do, without a companion.
He journeys on when they journey, though not as their companion
