وَيحَalas for سَلمىSalma لَوif تَرانيshe sees me
لَعَناهاwould trouble her ماwhat عَنانيtroubled me
Poor Salma—if she could see me,
Alas, Salma, if you could see me
What troubled me would trouble her:
Cursed be she who weakened my resolve
مُتلِفاًsquandering فيin اللَهوِrevelry ماليmy wealth
عاشِقاًin love with حورَdark-eyed women القِيانِsinging slave-girls
Squandering my wealth in revelry,
Indulging in idle play though I have no wealth
In love with the dark-eyed singing slave-girls.
Enamored with the maidens of the tribe
إِنَّماonly أَحزَنَsaddened قَلبيmy heart
قَولُthe words of سَلمىSalma إِذwhen أَتانيit reached me
What saddened my heart was only
Only Salma's words have saddened my heart
Salma’s words, when they reached me.
When she came and reproached me
وَلَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was زَماناًfor a time
خاليunburdened الذَرعِmental capacity لِشانيfor my own affairs
And indeed, for a time I was
Though once I lived freely and gaily
Carefree, tending to my own affairs.
With no ties to bind me
شاقَstirred longing in قَلبيmy heart وَعَنانيand troubled me
حُبُّlove for سَلمىSalma وَبَرانيand wore me thin
My heart was stirred to longing, and I was troubled
Salma's love has captured my heart and restrained me
By love for Salma—and it wore me thin.
And how often has an advisor
وَلَكَمand how often لامَreproached نَصيحٌa well-wisher
فيconcerning سُلَيمىSulayma وَنَهانيand told me to desist
And how often a well-wisher reproached me
Blamed Sulayma and forbidden me
Over Sulayma, and told me to desist.
