عَلِّلانيcheer me, you two بِعاتِقاتِwith aged wines الكُرومِthe vines
وَاِسقِيانيand give me drink, you two بِكَأسِwith the cup of أُمِّUmm (mother of) حَكيمِHakim
Cheer me, you two, with the vines' aged wines.
Entwine me with the vines' tendrils,
And give me drink from Umm Hakim's cup.
And let me drink from the chalice of the wise mother.
إِنَّهاindeed, she تَشرَبُdrinks المُدامَةَthe wine صِرفاًunmixed
فيin إِناءٍa vessel مِنَof الزُجاجِglass عَظيمِgreat
She drinks the wine unmixed,
For she drinks the wine undiluted
From a great vessel of glass.
In a great glass vessel.
جَنِّبونيkeep me away from أَذاةَthe harm of كُلِّevery لَئيمِbase man
إِنَّهُindeed, he ماas far as عَلِمتُI know شَرُّthe worst نَديمِdrinking companion
Keep me from the harm of every base man.
Spare me the harm of any scoundrel,
He is, as far as I know, the worst drinking companion.
For I know not the evil of a boon companion.
ثُمَّthen إِنif كانَthere is فيamong النَدامىthe drinking companions كَريمٌa generous man
فَأَذيقوهُthen let him taste مَسَّa touch of بَعضِsome of النَعيمِbliss
Then, if among the drinking companions there is a generous man,
But if among the revelers there is a noble one,
Let him taste a touch of bliss.
Let him taste some of the bliss.
لَيتَwould that حَظّيmy share مِنَamong النِساءِwomen سُلَيمىSulayma
إِنَّindeed سَلمايَmy Salma جَنَّتيmy paradise وَنَعيميand my bliss
Would that my share among women were Sulayma.
Would that my share of women were perfect,
Indeed, my Salma is my paradise and my bliss.
For my Salma is my heaven and delight.
فَدَعونيso spare me مِنَfrom المَلامَةِreproach فيهاconcerning her
إِنَّindeed مَنwhoever لامَنيreproached me لَغَيرُsurely not حَليمِforbearing
So spare me reproach on her account.
So cease blaming me for her,
For whoever reproaches me is surely not forbearing.
For he who blames me is not wise.
