My night grew long, so I spent it being served wine,
The night of Leila was long, so I passed it drinking wine,
When the courier came to me announcing Hisham's death.
When the postman came to tell me of Hisham's death.
وَأَتانيand he came to me بِحُلَّةٍwith a robe وَقَضيبٍand a staff
وَأَتاني بِحُلَّةٍ وَقَضيبٍ

وَأِتاني بِخاتَمِ ثُمَّ قاما
And he brought me a robe and a staff,
He brought me Hisham's robe, staff,
And he brought me a ring, then stood up.
And ring, then left.

أَفضَلَ الناسِ ناشِئاً وَغُلاما
So I chose as heir, to succeed me after my death,
After this loss, I now see my friend
The finest of men in youth and boyhood.
As the best of people, whether new or old,
ذاكُمُthat one (addressing you all) اِبنيmy son وَذاكَand that one قَرمُnoble chief قُرَيشٍQuraysh

خَيرُ خَلفٍ وَخَيرُهُم قُدّاما
That is my son, and that is the noble chief of Quraysh,
That was my son, the Quraishi nobleman,
The best successor, and the best of them at the fore.
The finest descendant, and their finest ancestor.
